President Obama answers Reddit users? questions

Find out what questions Redditors asked, what Obama said, and revel in a couple of memes

Earlier today, President Barack Obama stopped by online community Reddit to answer some of its users questions, with no topic off limit. While the president did not answer every question, the event was popular enough to cause Reddit to crumble under traffic pressure as users flooded Obama with over 12,000 questions and comments. Here are the full collection of the questions the president chose to answer, along with his unedited responses.

Q: We know how Republicans feel about protecting Internet Freedom. Is Internet Freedom an issue you'd push to add to the Democratic Party's 2012 platform?

"Internet freedom is something I know you all care passionately about; I do too. We will fight hard to make sure that the internet remains the open forum for everybody - from those who are expressing an idea to those to want to start a business. And although there will be occasional disagreements on the details of various legislative proposals, I won't stray from that principle - and it will be reflected in the platform."

Q: What are you going to do to end the corrupting influence of money in politics during your second term?

"Money has always been a factor in politics, but we are seeing something new in the no-holds barred flow of seven and eight figure checks, most undisclosed, into super-PACs; they fundamentally threaten to overwhelm the political process over the long run and drown out the voices of ordinary citizens. We need to start with passing the Disclose Act that is already written and been sponsored in Congress - to at least force disclosure of who is giving to who. We should also pass legislation prohibiting the bundling of campaign contributions from lobbyists. Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United (assuming the Supreme Court doesn't revisit it). Even if the amendment process falls short, it can shine a spotlight of the super-PAC phenomenon and help apply pressure for change."

Q:
I am recent law school graduate. Despite graduating from a top school, I find myself unemployed with a large student loan debt burden. While I'm sure my immediate prospects will improve in time, it's difficult to be optimistic about the future knowing that my ability to live a productive life -- to have a fulfilling career, to buy a house, to someday raise a family -- is hampered by my debt and the bleak economic outlook for young people. I know that I'm not alone in feeling this way. Many of us are demoralized. Your 2008 campaign was successful in large part due to the efforts of younger demographics. We worked for you, we campaigned for you, and we turned out in record numbers to vote for you. What can I say to encourage those in similar situations as I am to show up again in November? What hope can you offer us for your second term?

"I understand how tough it is out there for recent grads. You're right - your long term prospects are great, but that doesn't help in the short term. Obviously some of the steps we have taken already help young people at the start of their careers. Because of the health care bill, you can stay on your parent's plan until you're twenty six. Because of our student loan bill, we are lowering the debt burdens that young people have to carry. But the key for your future, and all our futures, is an economy that is growing and creating solid middle class jobs - and that's why the choice in this election is so important. The other party has two ideas for growth - more taxs cuts for the wealthy (paid for by raising tax burdens on the middle class and gutting investments like education) and getting rid of regulations we've put in place to control the excesses on wall street and help consumers. These ideas have been tried, they didnt work, and will make the economy worse. I want to keep promoting advanced manufacturing that will bring jobs back to America, promote all-American energy sources (including wind and solar), keep investing in education and make college more affordable, rebuild our infrastructure, invest in science, and reduce our deficit in a balanced way with prudent spending cuts and higher taxes on folks making more than $250,000/year. I don't promise that this will solve all our immediate economic challenges, but my plans will lay the foundation for long term growth for your generation, and for generations to follow. So don't be discouraged - we didn't get into this fix overnight, and we won't get out overnight, but we are making progress and with your help will make more."

Q: Are you considering increasing funds to the space program?

"Making sure we stay at the forefront of space exploration is a big priority for my administration. The passing of Neil Armstrong this week is a reminder of the inspiration and wonder that our space program has provided in the past; the curiosity probe on mars is a reminder of what remains to be discovered. The key is to make sure that we invest in cutting edge research that can take us to the next level - so even as we continue work with the international space station, we are focused on a potential mission to a asteroid as a prelude to a manned Mars flight."

Q: What was the most difficult decision that you had to make during this term?

"The decision to surge our forces in afghanistan. Any time you send our brave men and women into battle, you know that not everyone will come home safely, and that necessarily weighs heavily on you. The decision did help us blunt the taliban's momentum, and is allowing us to transition to afghan lead - so we will have recovered that surge at the end of this month, and will end the war at the end of 2014. But knowing of the heroes that have fallen is something you never forget."

Q: Who's your favourite Basketball player?

"Jordan - I'm a Bulls guy."

Q: What is the first thing you'll do on November 7th, win or lose?

"Win or lose, I'll be thanking everybody who is working so hard - especially all the volunteers in field offices all across the country, and the amazing young people in our campaign offices."

Q: What's the recipe for the White House's beer?

"It will be out soon! I can tell from first hand experience, it is tasty."

Q: How do you balance family life and hobbies with, well, being the POTUS?

"It's hard - truthfully the main thing other than work is just making sure that I'm spending enough time with michelle and the girls. The big advantage I have is that I live above the store - so I have no commute! So we make sure that when I'm in DC I never miss dinner with them at 6:30 pm - even if I have to go back down to the Oval for work later in the evening. I do work out every morning as well, and try to get a basketball or golf game in on the weekends just to get out of the bubble. Speaking of balance, though, I need to get going so I'm back in DC in time for dinner. But I want to thank everybody at reddit for participating - this is an example of how technology and the internet can empower the sorts of conversations that strengthen our democracy over the long run. AND REMEMBER TO VOTE IN NOVEMBER - if you need to know how to register, go to Gottaregister.com. By the way, if you want to know what I think about this whole reddit experience - NOT BAD!"

Serious Eats Neighborhood Guides: Sam Sifton's Red Hook (and ...

View Sam Sifton in a larger map

After just two years at the helm of The New York Times' dining section, Sam Sifton moved over to the National desk, where he is currently the editor. Sifton was a different kind of critic, weaving in literary and rock 'n' roll references throughout reviews of restaurants he analyzed in poetic tones. He honored the art of food critique and angered an avid readership by giving greater focus to the more theatrical elements of dining in New York: the setting, the cast of characters, the dialogue?all parts of the restaurant puzzle less thoroughly dissected by other critics.

He also brought attention to under-the-radar ethnic restaurants and places whose praises might otherwise have gone unsung. The Sifty Fifty, a list of his 50 favorite restaurants in the city, served as a kind of new Zagat guide, and people turned to Sifton for guidance on where to find the best spaghetti carbonara in Manhattan and how to impress a girlfriend's finicky parents.

No need to continue speaking of Sifton's skills in the past tense, however?his new cookbook, which draws from his experience answering reader questions during Thanksgiving, will hit shelves October 30th. To whet our palates in anticipation of the book's release, Sam shared his favorite places to eat undercover in and around his Red Hook neighborhood.

Sam's Picks

20120927-220285-Sam-Sifton-HouseofPizza.jpg

Pizza, slice: The best neighborhood slice is at House of Pizza & Calzone. It is, however, very difficult just to have a slice there. The point of the restaurant is the deep-fried calzone. It is not crispy, precisely. It is never greasy. It is simply a pillow of ricotta built around a slice of ham, wrapped in a cloak of gold. It is the finest calzone in New York City. This is true even on Fridays, when there is no ham in it.

Pizza pie: Lucali is the clear winner here, even when the wait to get into the dining room runs to 75 minutes and the tension mounts in your head like steam. It's a great pizza. That much will be revealed in time.

Cheap burger: Sit at the bar at Rocky Sullivan's, watching the game, chatting with George, drinking a Bud. Here comes a cheap burger, and it's just fine above its nest of fries, better still with another Bud and a slash of mayonnaise across the bun. Salt that. On the best nights there isn't a soul for two blocks in any direction and the smell off Erie Basin is all saltwater and tidal funk. This is what we do.

Fancy burger: Consistency matters. The Good Fork has it?and a warm, grown-up neighborhood vibe to go along with the food. Here are parents and children and parents of parents, third-daters preening, everyone in between. Have a burger at the bar, along with a spouse, child, or downloaded novel, and see.

20120927-220285-Sam-Sifton-Defontes.jpg

Defonte's [Photographs: Nick Solares]

Sandwich: There are plenty good sandwich options at Defonte's, an old dockworkers' canteen near the mouth of the Battery Tunnel. But fried eggplant with fresh mozz and a scattering of hot peppers is the best, best consumed with a Manhattan Special coffee soda and two tabloid newspapers in 30 minutes or less, sitting in the front seat of an American-built vehicle.

Coffee: Stumptown roasts coffee in Red Hook, but no longer seems to sell it brewed in any sort of helpful way. You need to head all the way up to Iris Caf?, under the BQE, to find it made.

Bagel: There are no credible bagels available in South Brooklyn at this time. Head up the slope to Prospect Park instead, get a dozen at Terrace Bagels, and count yourself lucky.

20120927-220285-Sam-Sifton-PokPok.jpg

Pok Pok wings [Photograph: J. Kenji Lopez-Alt]

Delivery food: There are no credible food deliveries available in South Brooklyn at this time. You hear that, Andy Ricker? Some Pok Pok wings to go, brought on a bike, real fast?

Breakfast: Stay away from brunch and good coffee. Eggs over-easy and dishwater joe at Court Street Coffee Shop should put you in the mind of the neighborhood that was, and which should always sort of be.

Dive bar: Sunny's is hardly a dive bar even if it looks like one. Does that make it the winner? That is something to discuss over a beer at Red Hook Bait & Tackle, anyway.

20120927-220285-Sam-Sifton-Buttermilk-Channel.jpg

Buttermilk Channel burger [Photograph: Robyn Lee]

Nicer wine, beer, or cocktail bar: Buttermilk Channel?it's so nice we call it a restaurant. The burger's right up near neighborhood best, and the fried chicken walks away with that prize. Brunch brings throngs, and the fall brings a deep hunger for lots of duck meatloaf, as often as possible. But Doug Crowell's artful and excellent wine list is reason enough to bring people to crowd 'round the bar experiencing the length and breadth of American wine making?and perhaps staying late enough to drink deeply of its bourbon traditions as well.

Chinese takeout: What has happened to Chinese takeout food in South Brooklyn and Brooklyn Heights in the past 30 years is nothing less than a tragedy, and there is nothing in the region to compare to the greats of the past, notably the late lamented Chun Yuan and China Chili, both on Montague Street. But Lichee Nut will do in a pinch?at least so long as you add to whatever order you make at least one plate of dry-saut?ed green beans or bok choy with garlic.

Late-night eats: One of the great things about South Brooklyn is that it folds like a tent around 11. You can haunt your way along Smith Street looking for late-night grub. But the dark side streets tell the story. This is sleepytown, USA. Hit the BQE and head up to Williamsburg, you want that late-night steak frites.

20120927-220285-Sam-Sifton-Prime-Meats.jpg

Smoked trout salad at Prime Meats [Photograph: Robyn Lee]

Date night: Dark table in a corner at Prime Meats. Share a wedge salad, some bluefish rillettes, a glass of ros?. Hold hands. That's nice.

20120927-220285-Sam-Sifton-RedHook-Lobster.jpg

Lobster roll [Photograph: Robyn Lee]

Can't-miss neighborhood spot: Can't beat a lobster roll at Red Hook Lobster Pound. Really, you can't.

AAIA: Less Driving, Fewer Collision, More Business for Repair Shops

?

The automotive collision repair business in the U.S. grew 3.3% in 2011 to $38.7B, in spite of a decline in miles driven and the number of collisions, according to the latest report from the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association.? Cars are lasting longer, being driven less and getting in fewer accidents, the report notes, citing multiple insurance and automotive industry sources.

The 2012 edition of the AAIA?s Digital Collision Repair Trends: Industry Statistics & Analysis arrives just a week before Telematics Update?s Insurance Telematics event in Chicago.? Insurance and automotive industry executives will convene next week to discuss usage-based insurance and the insurance implications of car sharing and EVs, among other topics.

The AAIA is most focused on the concerns of the independent car repair shop industry, of which there were 40,279 as of 2011, down from 46,700 in 2001, according to the report.? Insurers and independent car repair shops generally share the same objectives.

Not all car dealers embrace the collision repair business, but for most it is an essential element in their revenue portfolio.? Every OEM wants to see its cars repaired with genuine OEM parts.? The accident aftercare business is a strategic one for both new car dealers and OEMs and telematics ? a topic not covered in the AAIA report ? can serve as a lead generating device for the dealer channel.

The study reports that the average number of vehicle miles driven declined in 2008 for the first time in two decades.? The total was 2.96 trillion miles in 2011, down 1.2% from 2010.? Roadway congestion has also leveled off, according to the report.

The declining rate of vehicle usage has likely contributed to declining collision rates and declining insurance claims, both of which are cause for concern to both insurers and repair shops.? ?Most of this decline is coming in the developed world where more well-equipped cars are available with better educated drivers.? In developing markets around the world rising levels of vehicle ownership have brought to the fore issues of security, theft and rising accident rates setting the stage for very different insurance priorities.? (Preventing fraud has also emerged as a core issue throughout Europe.)

The proliferation of collision avoidance technologies including adaptive cruise control, blindspot detection, back-up cameras and lane departure warning have certainly contributed to the decline in collisions in the developed world.? But the U.S. saw a slight uptick in vehicle ownership last year after a leveling off between 2008 and 2010 ? rising slightly to 240.5M vehicles in 2011, according to data from Polk, which was a contributor to the report.? More cars usually translates to more miles driven and more accidents.

Polk also contributed average vehicle age data to the study.? Polk reports that the average car on the road in the U.S. is 11.1 years old, continuing a steady unbroken yearly rise from 8.4 years in 1995. Polk analysts say that the U.S. can expect to see the overall rate of vehicle ownership to resume its climb as the economy recovers and that the average age of a car will peak.

Vehicle age is a critical factor in determining the repair destination.? AAIA says that slightly more than one in three (36.9%) of vehicles in the one year-old category have its collision repair work performed at new car dealerships.? The percentage drops substantially after the first year as consumers seek independent repair channels to fulfill their collision repair needs.

So the megatrends represent a mixed bag of good news and bad news for independent repair shops.? Cars that last longer are more likely to be brought to an independent repair shop for repairs, but not if there are fewer accidents.

AAIA says that in 2010, independent repair shops contributed 86.3 percent of total sales in the collision repair industry, with dealership body shops making up only 13.7% of total sales.? ?Previous experience? and ?convenience? were the most important factors in selecting an outlet for collision repair work, the study states.

Insurers and independent repair shops have a common cause in capturing a larger chunk of the collision aftercare market.? For new car dealers, the best opportunity lies in leveraging vehicle connectivity technology to better identify, respond to and capture post-collision opportunities.?

Telematics has a role to play in this scenario, but no car maker has found the solution to this challenge yet.? Until OEMs can solve this problem their aftersales divisions will continue to miss out on billions of dollars in revenue while dealers battle insurers and independent shops for profitable collision repair opportunities.

Cabinet Hardware - Decorative Cabinet Hardware is a Design ...

The small details can make a huge difference in the look and feel of a kitchen or bathroom. For example, beautiful cherry cabinets would look marred or off-kilter with a pull-knob that was covered with dirt or was broken. The knobs and pulls on a cabinet are an important part of the overall design and style of the kitchen or bathroom, so it is important to make sure your kitchen has the appropriate cabinet hardware to keep it looking great. Below, read up about the different types of hardware available to you.

Traditional

A kitchen more on the traditional side will do well with a traditional cabinet knob. A traditional pull has classic lines and is a bit more on the decorative side. It can often be reminiscent of an older style with swooping lines and intricate scroll shapes. The knobs in a traditional style are often round buttons of pewter, brass or nickel. When the traditional type of home is decorated, it is done with versatility but with a bit of an old-world feel.

Modern Modern cabinet hardware made with simple, clean lines and shiny finishes. Modern designs have bold shapes without extra flair or intricacies. Modern pulls and knobs are the same. They often have one contemporary design and do not overly emphasis their curves with extra complexities. The home that uses a modern pull is one with a simple, minimalistic expression and vibe. It is not overdone.

Transitional Transitional style of knobs and pulls can be an eclectic mix of curves, lines and design charm. They are made to be a transition and a complex point where other styles converge. The home may be a mixture of a modern aesthetic with a few punches of traditional. This variety of knob would be perfect in a home like that.

Exotic Exotic knobs and pulls are a mixture of styles, textures and designs to create a quirky mixture that does not fit in any one category. They are used in homes whose occupants do not feel the need to define their way of expressing themselves in a design sense. Any style knob can be installed in a kitchen or bathroom cabinet. It is up to the home owner to design their style and their taste to suit their own needs. If the homeowner wants traditional cabinets with exotic pulls, that homeowner is more than welcome to mix those aesthetics to get their own flavor. That kind of design freedom is why people buy homes and decorate themselves instead of hiring someone to come in and guess at what they would like.

Regardless of what style you choose, your kitchen will look great with fresh new cabinet hardware.

2 Chinese ships hit by typhoon; 5 dead, 10 missing

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? A powerful typhoon pounded South Korea with strong winds and heavy rain Tuesday as it churned up rough seas that smashed two fishing ships into rocks, killing at least five fishermen and forcing the coast guard to perform a daring rescue for the survivors.

Rescuers saved 12 fishermen and were still searching for 10 missing from the Chinese ships that hit rocks off South Korea's southern Jeju island.

Separately, at least three other people died as Typhoon Bolaven knocked out power to 200,000 South Korean households, canceled flights and temporarily halted joint war games by U.S. and South Korean military forces.

North Korea, which is still struggling to rebuild from massive floods and a devastating drought before that, stood in the typhoon's path and was expected to be lashed by rain and wind Tuesday evening.

Dangerous waves kept rescue vessels from approaching the Chinese fishing ships off Jeju, so the coast guard used a special gun to shoot rope to one ship so that officers could pull themselves over and bring the fishermen back to shore, coast guard spokesman Ko Chang-keon said.

Eighteen fishermen survived. Twelve were rescued by the coast guard and the others swam or were washed ashore.

South Korea issued a storm warning for the capital, Seoul, as Bolaven battered the country's south and west, knocking over street lights and church spires and ripping signs from stores. A large container box crushed an apartment janitor to death, a woman fell to her death from a rooftop where she kept dried red peppers and a third person died after bricks hit a house, according to disaster and fire officials.

State media in North Korea reported gale force winds and heavy rain in many parts of the country as the typhoon's vanguard moved north. Big rainstorms often mean catastrophe in the North because of poor drainage, deforestation and decrepit infrastructure.

North Korea is still trying to help people with food, shelter, health care and clean water after heavy flooding in July, according to a recent United Nations situation report. More than 170 died nationwide, and tens of thousands of homes were destroyed in the floods, according to official North Korean accounts.

Many flood victims still live in tents with limited access to water and other basic facilities, the U.N. report said, and there is worry about increased malnutrition in coming weeks. Seoul's Unification Ministry approved a trip Wednesday by two South Korean aid groups to visit the North Korean city of Kaesong for talks on flood aid.

In Seoul, strong wind gusts left the streets covered with leaves, garbage and branches. More than 15,000 schools cancelled classes, and businesses and homes taped windows or pasted the glass with wet newspapers to keep them from shattering.

Nearly 200,000 South Korean households lost power, the government said, and more than 50 were left homeless because of floods or storm damage. Nearly 200 flights were canceled.

Weather officials had warned that Bolaven would be the strongest typhoon to hit the region in several years, but its gusts weren't as powerful as predicted.

The typhoon hit the southern Japanese island of Okinawa on Monday, injuring four people but doing less damage than feared before moving off to sea. More than 75,000 households lost power.

Farther south, another typhoon, Tembin, doubled back and hit Taiwan three days after drenching the same region before blowing out to sea. Fierce winds and rain toppled coconut trees in the beach resort town of Hengchun.

In Manila, the Philippine weather agency reissued typhoon warnings to residents and fishermen for Tembin, which blew out of the archipelago over the weekend. Fishing boats in the north were urged not to venture out to sea while larger ships were warned of possible big waves and heavy rains.

US says 78 percent U.S. Gulf output shut by storm Isaac

HOUSTON (Reuters) - U.S. regulators said on Monday that 78.02 percent of daily oil and 48.31 percent of daily natural gas production in the Gulf of Mexico was shut by Tropical Storm Isaac, which was forecast to make landfall as a minimal hurricane between the Florida Panhandle and western Louisiana by midweek.

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said oil and gas producers had shut 1.076 million barrels per day of oil, up from 333,815 bpd on Sunday, and 2.165 billion cubic feet per day, up from 371 million cubic feet on Sunday, of daily natural gas output as of Monday. Those figures were expected to rise in the coming days.

The Gulf accounts for 23 percent of daily oil and 7 percent of daily natural gas output in the U.S.

Isaac's forecast path will send the storm through one of the most energy infrastructure-heavy areas of the Gulf.

Pregnancy duration predicts stress response in the first months of life

After waking up, the concentration of the stress hormone cortisol in saliva rises considerably; this is true not only for grown-ups but for babies as well. A research team from the Ruhr-Universitt Bochum and from Basel has reported this finding in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology. "This gives us a new, non-invasive and uncomplicated possibility to already research the activity of the stress system during infancy," Prof. Dr. Gunther Meinlschmidt, of the Clinic of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at the LWL University Hospital of the RUB, said. The information not only open doors to the pursuit of as-yet unresolved research inquiries, but could also be used in the future to diagnose illnesses in the hormone-producing organs, such as the adrenal gland, of infants.

Testing stress hormones: easy with grown-ups, hard with babies

Scientists usually test the stress hormones of grown-ups by placing test subjects in an experiment under stress-inducing conditions. Since a similar practice is, for ethical reasons, unthinkable to use with babies, it is rather more difficult to find out how well-developed their stress systems are. The German-Swiss research team circumvented this problem by observing a naturally occurring "stress situation" waking up. The cortisol-concentration in grown-ups rises after they wake up, presumably to prepare the body for the requirements of the day. At what age this cortisol-reaction develops has long been unclear.

Cortisol levels rise in babies upon waking up

Data from 64 newborns and infants between the ages of three weeks and six months were used in the study. On two days the infants' parents had their children suck on a small cotton swab at home, once right after waking up and once half an hour later. Through this saliva, the scientists determined the cortisol-concentration. The cortisol amount rose considerably after the infants awoke in 63 % of cases. Neither the hour that the child woke up nor breastfeeding after waking played any role in these findings.

The shorter the pregnancy, the less the cortisol-level rises

Instead the length of the pregnancy had an effect. The earlier the children were born, the less their cortisol-levels rose after they woke up. "The stress hormone system may be less mature in babies who were born after a shorter pregnancy, which could have negative consequences," assistant professor Marion Tegethoff, of the Faculty for Psychology at the University of Basel, said. Since cortisol can inhibit the immune system, the lack of cortisol-level rises could lead to excess immunological responses, similarly to what occurs with allergies.

Approaching new research questions through saliva tests

Stress increases the risk for mental disorders and bodily illnesses. There is now a new method available to investigate the stress systems easily in babies. Prof. Meinlschmidt, head of the Research Department of Psychobiology, Psychosomatics, and Psychotherapy at the LWL University Hospital in Bochum explains future research questions: "In some rodents the hormonal stress response in the first weeks of life is, for a specific timeframe, close to shut down perhaps to protect organs that are developing during this time. It is still unknown if there is a comparable phase in humans, since it has long been impossible, because of ethical reasons, to repeatedly assess the hormonal stress reaction."

Carnival of Retirement: Calculated Risk or Foolish Mistake Edition ...

Piano

Piano (Photo credit: esc861)

Entrepreneurs frequently need to flex, bend and break the rules of personal finance. Sometimes it means putting up safe assets for a risky investment. At other times an entrepreneur needs to accept a higher total cost to abate short term cash issues. No matter the rule you break, an entrepreneur wants the risk to be calculated. The trouble is that it?s not always easy to separate your entrepreneurship dreams with the cold hard math of reality.

How do entrepreneurs differentiate between calculated risk and foolish mistake?

My wife, Mrs. No Telly No Trouble, has been bitten by my entrepreneurial bug. She wants to start her own private music studio this fall. For years, she has been an elementary school music teacher, but the long 50 mile commute and scheduling changes due from budget cuts has taken its toll. Since she?s started work, we?ve also become parents of two wonderful kids and private teaching will allow her to be more involved in their childhood than working/traveling 11 hours a day. Success means great benefits for my wife and my family.

I?d like to think that we?re making a calculated risk, but I seriously doubt I?m an object voice. What better place to put it to the test than to ask the financial blogging community? What do you think?

Of course, you?ll need a little information to make an assessment. Here?s a rundown of costs, assets and issues surrounding starting a music studio.

As a public school teacher, my wife can take the year off without pay and still go back to her job next year should things work out. It?s nice to know that there is potential income safety net. However, my wife will need to make a decision to leave or return to work 6 months before the start of next year. So while delaying is definitely a plus, it doesn?t leave a lot of room for building up a customer base.

Unfortunately, our finances aren?t as sounds as I?d prefer. Without a second income, we?d get by on emergency savings, but expenses would exceed income. I have full faith that we?d be ok for a year, but a second year would be tight if not impossible.

Luckily, our house can easily be used for a studio, but some investment will be needed. We?ll need to purchase a new piano since our electric is broken and our current piano can no longer hold a tuning. As you can imagine, pianos are costly; between $5,000 and $7,000. Leasing is no longer a common practice among piano stores. If we buy, we?re going to have to get a loan or pay for it out of the emergency fund that is necessary for making up for loss of income.

The school district where my wife works has cut so deep, she?s next in line for unemployment should additional cuts occur next year. In a way, this only increases the need for us to diversify income. However, that safety net we thought could replenish our losses could be nothing more than a mirage.

It?s not all worries and concerns. My wife already has a lead on 10 or more potential students this year. A full studio would be between 40 and 45 students. Few businesses opportunities start with 25% of capacity. Not without buying an existing business anyways.

We also live in an excellent location, where there is strong community interest in music. Additionally, our house is situated on a main road with plenty of commuter traffic. It should be easy to attract notice with little more than a sandwich board sign.

What do you think? Calculated risk or foolish mistake?
