COMMENTARY | Mitt Romney, current front-runner in the race for the GOP nomination to run for president against Barack Obama, has a problem. It's those pesky tax returns people keep asking him to release. CNN reports that even Chris Christie, a huge Romney supporter, is telling him to release the returns. Why won't Romney do it?
Romney revealed on January 17 that he pays about 15 percent in taxes, according to Politico.com. That's essentially the very low long-term capital gains tax rate, as expressed by the IRS. Romney may be living proof of the need for the so-called Buffet Rule, which would ensure the ultra rich do not pay lower taxes than the middle class, according to the Huffington Post.
It boils down to this: Romney may be afraid to release his tax data. This is the guy who, according to Slate.com, called concern about financial inequality in America "envy" of the rich. He might as well have said, "Let them eat cake," to the middle class.
Releasing his returns would show that not only is Romney rich, he pays almost no taxes compared to regular working class people. In a time when the bulk of the country is suffering from an economy that may well become known as the Second Great Depression Romney could be lighting hundred dollar bills on fir for warmth.
As an American I want someone in the White House who understand the struggles of regular citizens. I don't want to see some silver-spoon-sucking, born-to-wealth, politically-connected, plutocratic, slick-haired fat-cat who's never had to worry about money in his life running the country.
Romney will never understand the challenges facing the lower and middle classes in this country because he's never been one. To be fair I will never understand the fear of my personal fortune dropping to a point where I will have to settle for having a dollar for every two Americans instead of having even more than that. It must give Romney nightmares worrying that someday he may only be able to afford 100 Rolls-Royces. What horror!
I think Romney is hiding his tax returns to avoid proving to Americans just how out of touch with their reality he really is. If you have nothing to hide, Mr. Romney, you have nothing to fear. Release those returns now.
