Stocks trade mixed as Fed meeting eyed

Stocks were mixed Tuesday as the U.S. Federal Reserve was set to begin a two-day policy meeting at which the central bank is widely expected to unveil new measures to stimulate the economy.

Equities in the United States and Europe have rallied recently, with U.S. stocks mostly flat on Monday as investors paused following the best two-day run this year, on increased expectations both the Fed and the European Central Bank will plan further actions to stimulate their respective economies at meetings this week.

Last week, ECB President Mario Draghi said the ECB was ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro, fueling expectation the bank could revive its bond purchase program to help lower the borrowing costs of debt-stricken Spain and Italy.

"This move higher that we've seen is directly tied to the markets' expectations there would be further Fed easing and Draghi will be in very much lockstep coordination with the Fed in terms of trying to ease our way out of this predicament," said Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Capital in Jersey City, New Jersey.

"Draghi lit the fuse but the ball is now in Chairman Bernanke's court."

Government data showed consumer spending fell in June for the first time in nearly a year when accounting for inflation, while household income rose 0.5 percent.

The S&P/Case-Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 0.9 percent in May on a seasonally adjusted basis, topping economists' expectations for a 0.5 percent gain and suggested the recovery in the housng market continues to gain its footing.

Earnings season continues to roll along, with quarterly results scheduled from companies including Electronic Arts and FMC Corp.

Pfizer Inc shares climbed 1 percent to $23.95 in premarket trade after the largest U.S. drugmaker reported higher-than-expected quarterly earnings and affirmed its 2012 profit forecast.

Coach Inc slumped 14.7 percent to $52.68 in premarket after the upscale leather goods maker reported lower- than-expected fourth-quarter sales.

Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewer, fell short of second-quarter earnings expectations, selling less beer and spending more on distribution and marketing new U.S. brands. U.S.-listed shares fell 2.7 percent to $78.90 in premarket trade.

Aetna Inc posted weaker quarterly earnings as expenses rose, but the results were still higher than analysts had expected.

According to Thomson Reuters data through Monday morning, of the 294 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings to date for Q2 2012, 67 percent have reported earnings above analyst expectations. The average over the past four quarters is 68 percent.

Surgeons banned from conducting human research

Two University of California at Davis surgeons have been banned from doing human research after they injected bacteria into the head wounds of consenting terminally ill patients without university authorization, according to a letter sent from the school to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The university ordered Drs. J. Paul Muizelaar and Rudolph J. Schrot to immediately "cease and desist" doing the procedure last fall, according to the letter, dated Oct. 17, 2011, obtained by the Sacramento Bee.

Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi has ordered a review into the actions of Muizelaar, who is chairman of the department of neurological surgery at U.C. Davis, and Schrot, an assistant professor.

The lack of approval before conducting human research could jeopardize the school's federal funding, said Rosamond Rhodes, director of bioethics education at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

"You are required to comply with federal rules if you are an institution accepting federal funding for research," she said. "Whether or not the project is funded by the federal government, it still has to comply with the rules."

A spokesperson for the FDA told ABCNews.com it "cannot confirm nor deny the existence of an investigation."

The surgeons said they were given consent by three terminal patients with glioblastomas, tumors that arise from the supportive tissue of the brain, to insert bacteria into their head wounds. The doctors believed the bacteria would create a postoperative infection that could help the patients live longer, according to documents included in the letter to the FDA.

The surgeons insisted they were conducting an innovative treatment, not research.

"There are people who blatantly break the rules that endanger all of their research programs. We certainly didn't blatantly trample any rules," Muizelaar told the Sacramento Bee.

Two of the patients contracted sepsis and died as a result of the procedure, according to the university.

Harris A. Lewin, vice chancellor for research, wrote that the experimental procedure, which had been conducted on three patients without university or FDA permission, "constituted serious and continuing noncompliance reportable to the FDA."

Muizelaar was ordered to hand off his clinical investigations, while Schrot was required to take the FDA's Clinical Investigator Training Course "to assure he possesses requisite knowledge to perform future studies, if and as permitted," the letter stated.

On Thursday, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine awarded the university $53 million for research into Huntington's disease, limb ischemia and osteoporosis.

Life as a voice-over artist must be pretty cool. How did you get into a job like this?

In 1998, I was fresh out of college, working as an actress and waitressing in the evenings to make extra money. A friend of mine who had been working in voice-overs called me in a panic. The woman he was supposed to read a radio commercial with had cancelled at the last minute. He was calling to ask if I could be at the studio in a half an hour to fill in for her. I was a little intimidated, but half an hour later, I was doing my first voice-over for a jewelry company in Philadelphia. Little did I know that it would lead to a very fulfilling 14-year (and counting) career!

What does your typical job schedule and day look like? Does that change at any point during the year?

The best thing about the voice-over world is the light schedule. Most of the time, I?m recording radio and TV commercials, so my clients book me by the hour. On a typical week, I tend to work about eight hours total in the booth. I also spend about four hours per week coaching voice-over students in my home studio or over Skype.

A few times a year, I take on an audio book project. The audio book work is so satisfying; I love being the storyteller and sinking into a good work of fiction. But audio books take a lot of time. First, I read the book to myself, play around with how the character voices should sound (it?s not unusual to have 40 character voices in one audio book!) and research any pronunciations/accents that might be needed. Then I typically record for seven hours per day until the audio book is complete. It?s quite a challenge; it really stretches me as a voice-over artist and I just love it.

Was there ever a moment in your career where you?ve thought, ?I made it!?? What was it?

I signed on to be ?the voice? of the Sprout Network about six years ago and have been working with Sprout ever since. You?ll hear me in between shows on Sprout announcing what?s coming up next, holiday specials, etc. My voice matched the network so well and the people at Sprout are so wonderful to work with that it just felt like a match made in heaven. Also, the work is very consistent. When you?re a freelancer, so much time is spent looking for your next job that finding a regular client who uses you for six years and counting is like striking gold.

What challenges keep you awake at night?

I take my coaching practice seriously. I spend a lot of time thinking about how to give my students the very best training possible. Voice-over work is a subtle craft and sometimes the slightest little nuance in the voice can make a huge difference in the overall read. Guiding someone into hearing the nuances is a very interesting and sometimes challenging process. I only take on highly-motivated students who are really ready to delve into the work. In the end, they often end up inspiring me with their passion and creativity.

Is work/life balance ever a problem with you? If so, what is one no-fail tactic you use to create balance?

Even though my actual work schedule is light, I?m always working on improving my craft. I still take classes and spend a lot of time listening to voice-over artists and audio book narrators I admire. Since I don?t have a 9 to 5 schedule, it can be easy for me to work into the evenings and lose myself in ?self-improvement? mode. However, the tactic I?ve taken to avoid this is by adhering to my husband?s work schedule. He has a 9 to 5 job, so when he gets home, that?s my ?call it quits? time, too.

What are some of the rules you live by?

I?m also a certified life coach and I?ve learned through coaching that having a big dream ? a vision for where I want my life and career to go ? is really important to me. I write down my dreams in detail just for the fun of it. I?m also very visual, so I love cutting photos out of magazines that inspire me and align with my dream life. I don?t put a lot of pressure on myself to make any of it happen or worry about how it will happen, I just keep it light and fun. But I keep dreaming big. Years ago, I wrote down a dream vacation and totally forgot about it. Three years later, I got chills on the plane home from Italy when I realized I?d just taken the exact vacation I?d written down three years prior without even realizing it.

Also, I choose not to believe in ?competition? in a traditional sense. I have no interest in being a cutthroat competitor. If I can?t take a job for whatever reason, I?ll recommend another voice talent who I think does great work. If the client continues to hire that person, I?m grateful that I could be part of their success. Practices like that help me grow into the person I want to be.

What qualities does it take for someone to be successful as a voice-over artist?

One of the big misconceptions about voice-over work is that you have to have a ?special sounding? voice, like James Earl Jones, but it isn?t true. In fact, no one comments on the ?specialness? of my voice when I?m not in the booth! A great sounding voice certainly won?t hurt you, but you need a lot more than that to make a career in voice-over work happen.

A great voice-over artist needs acting skill. You need to be able to take direction easily, create characters quickly, have the ability to read the same script 20 different ways, make the writer?s words sound natural, have a good ear for subtle nuance and have a strong sense of timing.

What advice do you have for women who aspire to walk in your shoes?

If you don?t have an acting background, acting classes or private voice-over classes are a must for getting started. Improv classes are especially helpful since much of voice-over work requires you to make quick choices on the spot.

Also, don?t give up. Breaking into voice-over can take some time, but if you?ve developed your skills and have passion for the work, the career potential and lifestyle is worth the wait!

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

I just love commercial work, so in five years, I?d like to be the voice of a few major household brands. I?d be a great voice of PetSmart, Trident gum or Neutrogena. So, hopefully the ad agents for those companies are reading this right now!

What is your niche in the voice-over world?

Over the years, I?ve learned that knowing your niche is vitally important to growing your career. For a long time, I fought my niche. The sound I do best is cheery, friendly, light, fresh. Think minty gum, dryer sheets, kids toys, you get the idea. For a long time, I tried to be something I wasn?t: the sexy girl. I wanted to have a sexy voice, I really did, but guess what? I do NOT have a sexy voice! Or at least, there are other women who do it much better than I do. Once I surrendered to being my wholesome, perky self, the work flowed in so much more easily.

I may never be the voice of a perfume ? unless it?s a Disney princess scent ? but that?s okay. Now, even my website reflects my niche: it has a bright, cheery, fresh look to it. It helps clients cast me easily for what I do best.

I really encourage my students to find their niche early, but the interesting thing is that it often takes a little wrestling with. At first, many of my students feel uncomfortable with the very thing they?re best at. So much of ?you? comes through your voice that it sometimes brings to your attention truths about yourself you may not want to face. But, that?s what listeners want. Truth. They want to hear genuine, relatable truth coming from a real person. If you try to hide who you really are when you?re in the booth, your listeners will hear ?the fake? immediately and tune you out. I love the Oscar Wilde quote ?Be yourself. Everyone else is taken.? It?s true in life as well as voice-overs.

(AP) ? Days after the mass shootings in Colorado, guns shifted to the forefront of the presidential campaign as President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney engaged in their most extensive discussions on the issue since the tragedy.

Obama, in a speech to an African-American group Wednesday in New Orleans, embraced some degree of additional restrictions on guns. He acknowledged that not enough had been done to prevent weapons from getting into the hands of criminals and pledged to work with lawmakers from both parties to move forward on the matter.

Romney said in a television interview that changing the nation's laws would not prevent gun-related tragedies. But he mistakenly said many weapons used by the shooting suspect in Aurora, Colo., were obtained illegally, despite the fact that authorities allege that the firearms used to kill 12 people and injure dozens more were purchased legally.

Neither candidate strayed significantly in their remarks Wednesday from their previously held positions on gun violence. But their pointed comments revived a debate ? if perhaps only briefly ? that has steadily faded to the background in national politics and been virtually non-existent in the 2012 campaign.

The White House in particular has faced fresh questions since the shootings about whether Obama, a strong supporter of gun control as a senator from Illinois, would make an election-year push for stricter measures.

Following last year's killing of six people and the wounding of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona, Obama called for steps to "keep those irresponsible, law-breaking few from getting their hands on a gun in the first place." But he has advanced no legislative proposals since then.

The White House blames the lack of legislation in part on congressional opposition and says Obama has used his executive powers to strengthen some gun control measures.

It's been more than a decade since gun control advocates had a realistic hope of getting the type of legislation they seek, despite predictions that each shocking outburst of violence would lead to action.

During remarks Wednesday night to the National Urban League, Obama acknowledged a national pattern of calling for tougher gun restrictions in the wake of violent crimes but not following through.

"Too often, those efforts are defeated by politics and by lobbying and eventually by the pull of our collective attention elsewhere," he said.

Obama called for stepped-up background checks for people who want to purchase guns and restrictions to keep mentally imbalanced individuals from buying weapons. Those steps, he said, "shouldn't be controversial. They should be common sense."

Still, Obama is unlikely to make a robust push for new gun control legislation while mired in a deadlocked campaign centered squarely on the economy.

Romney was pressed on gun control during an interview with NBC News in London, where he is attending the Olympics and kicking off a three-country foreign trip. The presumptive Republican nominee said changing laws won't "make all bad things go away."

Romney was asked about his tenure as Massachusetts governor, when he signed a bill that banned some assault-style weapons like the type the Colorado shooter is alleged to have used. At the time, Romney described such guns as "instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people."

Asked if he stood by those comments, Romney mentioned the Massachusetts ban but said he didn't think current laws needed to change.

"I don't happen to believe that America needs new gun laws. A lot of what this ... young man did was clearly against the law. But the fact that it was against the law did not prevent it from happening," Romney said.

Authorities have said the suspected Colorado shooter, James Holmes, methodically stockpiled weapons and explosives at work and home in recent months. He purchased thousands of rounds of ammunition and a shotgun, a semi-automatic rifle and two Glock pistols, authorities said.

On Friday, clad head to toe in combat gear, he allegedly burst into a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater, tossed gas canisters into the crowd and opened fire.

The Colorado shootings also have brought fresh attention to the frequent incidents of gun violence that plague many American cities, including Obama's hometown of Chicago.

Obama addressed the nationwide troubles in front of the Urban League in part because African-Americans, who make up the bulk of the organization's membership, have been disproportionately affected by gun violence. While mass shootings like the one in Colorado receive widespread attention, Obama said roughly the same number of young people are killed in the U.S. by guns every day and a half.

"For every Columbine or Virginia Tech, there are dozens gunned down on the streets of Chicago and Atlanta, and here in New Orleans," he said. "For every Tucson or Aurora, there is daily heartbreak over young Americans shot in Milwaukee or Cleveland."

The president urged parents, neighbors and teachers to also play a role in helping end gun violence among young people.

Looks like the New York Times is signaling the death knell for RIM, albeit subtly. In a move that surely underscores the withering faith content companies have for the once beloved platform, the venerable Sulzberger-backed news organization has pulled all support for its DealBook Reader and NYTimes app for BlackBerry as of July 23rd. Users that attempt to access that application in the days since will find a stale content list that no longer updates and are being urged, instead, to visit the paper's mobile site for a "more complete... experience." And as if the ailing Waterloo-based company hadn't suffered enough indignity, it's been cast out of the developer pen alongside WebOS, joining PalmPre users on the reject list. Not to worry though, the Times crossword app has yet to get the axe -- that's got to be some consolation, no? You can check out the NYT's official line on its decision at the source below.

Human resources departments aren?t providing their companies enough support for employees, talent recruitment, learning and development, and succession planning ? according to a study by a global strategic-consulting firm.

The study by The Hackett Group is entitled, ??Cracks in the Foundation: Closing the Critical Skills Gap Undermining Business Capabilities.? Its 2012 study concludes that finance, information technology, procurement and HR are all suffering from a shortfall in skills and talent.

The research included six functions:

  1. Workforce planning and succession
  2. Collaboration/knowledge sharing
  3. Retention
  4. Managing performance
  5. Learning and development
  6. Recruiting and staffing

Management complained, on average, that HR is only providing ?talent-management support? less than 35 percent of the time.

Another complaint: HR departments only deliver a comprehensive level of needed service less than 35 percent of the time.

The Hackett Group?s research echoes other 2012 studies:

?At most companies, business services functions were badly weakened by across-the-board cuts during the recent recession,? said The Hackett Group Global HR Practice Leader Harry Osle. ?Underinvestment in talent has created deficits in important skills such as business acumen, strategic thinking and analysis, change management, and process improvement capabilities.?

He also said management and HR aren?t collaborating.

?This is a dangerous situation with the potential to cripple companies that don?t address it quickly,? he added. ?While these business services functions are often considered cost-centers, they provide key services that enable companies to manage and optimize assets ranging from cash, capital and talent to technology and product/service inputs.?

There?s additional management dissatisfaction most of the time with HR:

  • Talent management service ? ?nearly 70 percent of the time
  • Collaboration and knowledge sharing ? dissatisfied or very dissatisfied ? 79 percent
  • Retention ? dissatisfied or very dissatisfied ? 70 percent

Eighteen percent o f the companies said HR delivered adequate proficiency in collaboration and knowledge sharing.

The bright spot: Thirty-three to 47 percent of companies expressed satisfaction in the level of HR services in workforce planning, performance

?Today?s changing business environment requires that business services organizations retool and radically change their mix of staff to improve their ability to directly impact on business performance,? said The Hackett Group Chief Research Officer Michel Janssen. ?Talent management is key, and business services can?t accomplish this without strong and effective support from HR.?

He did say management and HR must work harder to improvement their communication.

?Business services managers must take the lead in specifying their needs, and taking accountability for results for talent management,? he added. ?HR must provide comprehensive process and administrative support, methods and tools, training and guidance to function leaders.?

The study made more recommendations:

  • Business services must do a better job of defining and prioritizing the skills and characteristics that are truly essential for job candidates to have.
  • HR can also rely less heavily on external labor markets, and develop staff, as well as examine alternative approaches to recruiting, such as hiring less-experienced staff with development potential and permission-based recruiting.
  • ?Candidate relationship management is also a powerful emerging strategy for handling company interactions with applicants, candidates and current employees.

My sense: In view of The Hackett Group research, and the other two studies, it?s obvious that many HR professionals need training in process improvement, communication and leadership.

US braces for make-or-break economic data

The United States is bracing for growth figures that will set the tone for the last 100 days of the race to the White House and help decide if the Fed pulls the trigger on more economic stimulus.

Early Friday in Washington, the Commerce Department will release its first estimate of how much the world's largest economy grew in the second quarter of this year, from April to June.

With the fog of crisis hanging thick in the air, economists' estimates range wildly.

While Briefing.com puts the Wall Street consensus at 1.2 percent, respected estimates range from close to zero to fairly robust growth of two percent.

Anything close to two percent would be a thumping victory for President Barack Obama, all but killing suggestions that the economy is ready to take another dive.

According to one political scientist, two percent growth would even portend near-certain victory for the president on November 6.

Emory University professor Alan Abramowitz has devised a formula to predict the election winner, based on incumbency, polarization, the president's approval rating and second quarter GDP.

The model has correctly predicted the popular vote in the last five elections.

"If GDP growth comes in at two percent," he said recently, "then my model would forecast that the president would end up with close to 51 percent of the popular vote."

On all but four occasions -- in 1824, 1876, 1888 and 2000 -- winning the popular vote has been enough to carry the election.

But amid doubts about the rate of consumer spending, business investment and government outlays in the last few months, a two percent growth rate is far from assured.

If growth is closer to one percent, it will provide a major boon to Republican challenger Mitt Romney, enough, perhaps to break the stalemate that has characterized the race so far.

Although Romney has heavily attacked Obama's economic policies amid poor jobs data, both candidates currently hold 46 percent of the vote, according to Gallup tracking polls, a level of support that has changed little in the last three months.

And both campaigns face additional pitfalls on Friday.

The Commerce Department will also present revisions to the last few years of growth data, based on fuller evidence that has the potential to recast the political race.

Any sign that growth has been even slower than first thought would be highly damaging to Obama, while evidence of better growth could spur renewed optimism and upgrade his economic legacy.

"Market participants are probably mostly concerned with Q2 and the previous quarter or two," said Stephen Stanley of Pierpont Securities, "though significant revisions over the past few years could find their way into the political campaign conversation."

Significantly, both the second quarter data and the revisions also have the potential to recast the policy of the Federal Reserve.

Until now, the Fed has been cautious about launching any major new stimulus, but the new data has the potential to tip the scales toward new action.

But not everyone is convinced that action would come when the Fed's top policy panel meets next week.

A sharp downward revision to first quarter GDP or a negative surprise for the second quarter "will increase the pressure on the Fed to do something next week," said Joseph LaVorgna of Deutsche Bank.

But, he added, action at the September 12-13 meeting was more likely.

It?s Truck Party Week and we?re keeping an outdoor picnic in mind (being summer and all). ?There are obviously soooo many things you can do for a picnic, heck even laying out a couple blankets and enjoying a nice PB and J platter would work:

We talked last week about activities that double as favors and this week we?re on a food/drink that double as decor kick. ?On the food front we like baskets of berries paired with butter &?jam and biscuits for a little ?scone bar?. ?SO CHARMING!

Nike Kinect Training arrives October 30th, looks to whip you into shape for $50We caught a glimpse of that Nike+ Kinect Training had to offer back at E3. Now, we'll all be able to give it our best shot just before the holiday season. The Kinect exercise title for the Xbox 360 is set to hit shelves on October 30th and will carry a $49.99 price tag. Claiming to make us "athlete-fit", the software will offer constant tips on form and technique while monthly reports will display progress along the way. Still no word on companion apps for mobile platforms, but the kit is expected to play nice with Windows Phone devices at launch for session reminders and sharing achievements with training mates.
