Iraq vet uses rear naked choke to stop robbery
You walk into a store and see someone holding up the cashier. What do you do? If you're Zack Thome, an Iraq vet and someone who has trained in MMA, you slap a rear naked choke on the offender and choke him out.
Original Video- More videos at TinyPic
Thome held Brandon Slanger, the suspect who is said to be schizophrenic, down as someone else called the police. Thome said he lives near the store and didn't want to see the cashier hurt.
"It's kind of my hometown.? I live right next to the place, you know, I'm in there everyday.? I think if it was the other way around, if I worked there and the guy at the register was there, he would have done the same thing," said Thome.
Kudos to Thome for using his MMA training to good use. But unless you've actually trained, don't try this at home, folks. Watching every UFC pay-per-view doesn't count.

Career advice: From 'tech manager' to 'info leader' | Nicosia ...
You know your way around the data centre. Your staff respect you and it?s largely safe to walk among the users without fear of assault. By industry standards, you run a tight ship. However, a couple of things are niggling you, writes Ade McCormack:
?You rarely get involved in strategic business decisions.
?The chief executive still calls you first when their laptop is broken.
Where does this leave your career?
The reason you are not included in strategic business decision-making is for much the same reason the catering manager is not invited to board meetings. You are both seen as operationally important, but not strategically significant.
Despite the wisdom you will have accrued as to how technologies can and do change business models for the better, you cannot get the senior management team?s attention.
In fact, the last time you tried, the chief finance officer looked at you as if you were a supermarket check-out assistant offering lifestyle and wealth management advice. You are seen as first-line support ? a view reinforced by the fact that more IT elements can now be bought in packaged form, which means the amount of software development has dropped considerably. The creative aspects of IT are disappearing and what remains are the handle-turning procedural elements of IT management.
The ?cloud? ? aka the internet ? is taking this to the extreme, enabling users, in effect, to hire a virtualised IT function via the web. So it would appear that the writing is on the wall for IT managers.
This is not totally true, however. Some aspects of your in-house portfolio of IT services do not lend themselves to a cloud-based model. Cloud vendors might focus on services that deliver the greatest financial return and so will avoid niche, complex or legacy systems ? these will remain your responsibility.
But overall, the bad news is that end-user IT departments are dying. The good news is, of course, that IT departments are dying. Because it?s not about technology management any more. Users don?t want technology per se, they want what technology can give them, ie information, knowledge and even wisdom.
While it might be a few years before I can convince the market to talk about the IT industry morphing to the IKW (Information, Knowledge, Wisdom) industry, I believe this is what is happening. The interesting end of the digital services world is becoming the provision of technologies that help people make better decisions through better business intelligence (sweat the database) and effective collaborative tools (sweat the staff).
Smart IT managers with genuine CIO aspirations are thus advised to take the following steps:
?Decouple yourself from technology. By all means let people know you are digitally alert, but suppress tech jargon when talking to the users.
?Express all request and reporting in terms of the organisation?s strategic imperatives.
?Embrace the cloud. The sooner you outsource technology management the sooner you can focus on value-adding information and collaboration services.
?Pay great attention to your brand. Read up on brand management.
?Build credibility with the users by taking a sabbatical on the user side. A stint in sales or finance will equip you with the skills needed not just to be on the senior management team, but one day to lead it.
?You know you are intelligent. In fact you know you can reason someone to death if necessary. But possibly your intelligence is more IQ than emotional intelligence. Consider whether you need to work on your softer side.
?If you are going to become a senior player in the organisation, you need to ensure that you have the political skills to remain a senior player. Forming alliances with the powerful starts with knowing who the powerful are and what they see of value in you.
?Treat your IT function as if you were a customer. This again positions you as a consumer of IT services rather than a provider. Your focus is on innovative ways to lever information to achieve strategic objectives.
?Look for land grab opportunities that extend your influence. You could become chief energy officer, chief property officer, and chief business process officer, to name a few.
Mindlessly applying for CIO roles would be akin to following your fellow lemmings off a cliff. Be aware that organisations need their CIOs to be leaders. As someone moving up through the ranks you can steer your personal development in a manner that meets the need of employers today and tomorrow. In a post industrial digital economy, we need information leaders rather than IT managers.

I WANT TO SELL MY STRUCTURED SETTLEMENT PAYMENTS ...
Selling your structured settlement payments provides you with money today in exchange for money that is due to you in the future through your structured settlement. Essentially when you sell some or all of your structured settlement, it enables you to receive the funds you require right away.
A structured settlement is a payment made to an injured person on a regular basis, either monthly or yearly, over a period of years rather than a one-time payment when a lawsuit gets settled. Settlements like this usually result from wrongful death, personal injury, or medical malpractice claims. The double edged sword of a structured settlement or annuity is that you are locked into it in terms of the schedule ? you cannot alter the payment structure in any way once you agree to it. While a structured settlement may work in the short term, it provides no flexibility as your life and financial needs change over time.
Receiving an immediate lump sum payment of cash for your some or all of your settlement or annuity may be an option to consider if circumstance arise that require cash immediately. For example you may need money now to buy a house, pay off credit card debit, purchase a car, save your house from foreclosure, pay college tuition, take advantage of an investment opportunity, start a business or pay unforeseen medical expenses. Companies that purchase settlements can help you in this circumstance by providing immediate cash for dealing.
When you are ready to arrange for a lump sum payment of immediate cash for some or all of your settlement, it is very helpful if you have at your fingertips all of the documents concerning your structured settlement. Remember that if you take a one-time payment you no longer hold the legal rights to your settlement but the benefits of getting that lump sum for your immediate needs may very well outweigh waiting for years or even decades to get your annuity payments
When looking to sell structured settlement payments, make sure that the staff has experience and knowledge in this area. It could make all the difference in how much money you get and how fast you get that money. It?s critical to note that structured settlement transactions don?t require your credit history or information about your income ? the only qualification is the structured settlement itself. You should never be pressured into selling more of the structured settlement than you need to sell in order to raise the money for your current need. An experienced, knowledgeable company should be able to set something up that gives you the peace of mind you are looking for.
The process of getting the lump sum payment for your settlement requires a special court order to protect you. A company with experience in this area will have deep knowledge of the process and can easily handle the entire transaction for you, in the shortest possible time.

Riverside County offers free pets at Match-a-Thon this weekend
Riverside County Animal Services is offering free pets on March 31 during its Mega Match-a-Thon adoption event, it was recently announced.

Riverside County Animal Services is offering free pets on March 31 during its Mega Match-a-Thon adoption event.
The special, free-pets promotion marks a first for Riverside County Animal Services.
?We?ve never done anything like this, to this magnitude, so we?re all pretty excited to see how it goes,? Director Robert Miller said, in a? released statement. ?We would be more than happy to run out of pets on Saturday.?
Miller said the county is able to make this historic offer to its pet fans after the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) awarded Riverside County with a one-time grant. The $10,000 grant is helping to offset the adoption event, Miller said.
The Mega Match-a-Thon adoption event is running at the county?s two largest shelters: The Coachella Valley Animal Campus, located at 72-050 Pet Land Place in Thousand Palms and the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter located at 6851 Van Buren Blvd. in? Jurupa Valley.
Adopters must be 18 years or older and provide a valid state-issued identification. Adopters do not have to live in Riverside County to qualify for an adoption. However, adopters in unincorporated county areas and residents of Riverside cannot adopt if they already have the four-dog limit.
The county shelters are open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the event.
Three other animal organizations are participating in the Mega Match-a-Thon event to some varying degrees.
The Corona Animal Shelter (608 W. Harrington, Corona, 92880) is offering pets for $15. The Corona shelter is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Norco Animal Shelter (98 Sixth St., Norco, 92860) is offering dogs for a $28 adoption fee and cats for $17. The Norco shelter is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Also, Animal Samaritans is conducting its 12th Annual Walk for the Animals at Palm Desert Civic Park at 73-600 Fred Waring Drive in Palm Desert. Organizers and volunteers are going to share information about the county Mega Match-a-Thon event with fellow animal advocates and pet enthusiasts.
To make the county events livelier, the Inland Empire Classic Mustang Club is running its Third Annual Park N Bark car show at the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter. Vintage automobiles will be on display 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the participants? registration entry fee goes toward helping the shelter?s animals.
KOLA Radio (99.9 FM) is doing a live remote from the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Radio personalities will be encouraging listeners to come to the shelter and adopt their new lifelong pal for free.
Live music and food vendors will also give the shelter a vibrant feel.
At the Coachella Valley Animal Campus, live music and food vendors will also be giving the shelter some fun energy. Also, the shelter is hosting a Wiener Dog Fun Run. Any Dachshund owner is welcome to enter their dog for FREE. The races will begin at about 10 a.m. and run for approximately one hour, depending on the number of participants. Prizes will be awarded.
Wiener dog owners who pre-register their dogs will be guaranteed a spot in the races. Pre-register your wiener dog by sending Public Information Officer John Welsh an e-mail at jcwelsh@rivcocha.org. Provide the dog?s name, sex, age and where the dog calls home ? and why you think your dog will win.
All dogs must be walked on a leash prior to the races. Also, owners must have proof of current rabies vaccination to enter.
For the non-wiener dog crowd, a small-breeds-only race will happen after the wiener dogs event. Only a select amount of dogs will be allowed to run. This competition is also FREE ? but dog owners MUST pre-register their dog with John Welsh at jcwelsh@rivcocha.org.
Radio station 100.5 FM (?The MIX?) is broadcasting live from the shelter between 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Radio personality Valerie Kattz will be encouraging pet fans to come down to adopt.
Finally, a super-fun, first-time-ever ?Inkers for Animals? pet-tattoo competition will happen from approximately noon to 1 p.m. at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus. Anyone with a pet tattoo is welcome to enter. Registration is FREE and participants can just show up. The only rule is that the featured pet tattoo be located in an area that can be viewed publicly by the celebrity judges. (In short, please no tattoos in non-family-friendly locations.) The tattoos will be judged for creativity, color, ornate design, etc. Prizes will be awarded the top scorers.

How foreclosures affect buyers and sellers

Mike Blake / Reuters
Overview of a subdivision of single family homes in San Marcos, Calif. The nation's banks own more than 600,000 single-family homes, according to RealtyTrac.
By Marcie Geffner, bankrate.com
If anything is certain about the foreclosure crisis, it's that it isn't over. That fact has important implications, not only for people losing their homes, but also for those planning to sell or buy a home this year.
As of January, about 3 million properties were in foreclosure, headed that way or already owned by banks, according to CoreLogic, an information, analytics and business services company in Santa Ana, Calif.
Approximately 1.6 million of those homes were believed to be within the so-called shadow inventory, a supply of foreclosure properties not yet listed for sale. It's a major stumbling block to a housing recovery, says Mark Fleming, chief economist of CoreLogic.
"It puts downward pressure on home prices, which hurts home sales and building activity," Fleming said in a statement.
Given that prelude, here's what sellers and buyers can expect.
Price
Foreclosures and short sales have widened the gap between sellers' and buyers' perceptions of prices. Sellers "think their home is worth more than it really is" and buyers "think the prices are too high," says Louis Cammarosano, general manager at HomeGain, a real estate information website in Emeryville, Calif.
One cause of that gap is realty brokers' tendency to scrub foreclosures and short sales from comparable sales data used to set sellers' asking prices. While sellers might feel a moral justification for that approach, Cammarosano says it's "disingenuous" because the status of the seller's mortgage isn't important to buyers.
"(Just because) you happen to be paying your mortgage, that doesn't mean the buyer has to step into your shoes and pay your inflated price," he says.
Interest rates
Traditionally, mortgage rates have been something of a wild card for homebuyers. But that's not the case today because the Federal Reserve has announced its intention to keep rates low at least through late 2014. That's not a guarantee, but it has taken some of the urgency out of homebuying and put more buyers into a wait-and-see pattern.
"The perception that prices could go lower, a lot of foreclosures in the pipeline and (the expectation) that rates will remain low -- that's certainly keeping some people on the sidelines," Cammarosano says.
Location
Buyers might be reluctant to purchase a home in a neighborhood plagued by foreclosures and short sales. But Stephen Israel, president of Buyer's Edge Co., a real estate brokerage in Bethesda, Md., says buyers can take a clue from real estate investors who are looking at areas that have been hard hit, yet might be prime for a turnaround.
"Investors are interested in neighborhoods that were beat up by foreclosures and that have other redeeming features that they then believe will be the first to bounce back," he says.
Those redeeming features might include easy access to public transportation, well-regarded schools, attractive shopping centers and other positive infrastructure elements. Neighborhoods that have such amenities can be "really interesting pockets, where there could be some very good values," Israel says.
Condition??
Foreclosure and short sale homes are often, though not always, in worse shape than other homes on the market. That's especially problematic for buyers if a home has been vacant a long time because neglect can result in problems in plumbing, heating, cooling, electrical and other systems.
"There is a big difference," Israel says, "between a property that has been vacant a few weeks and one that has been vacant a year or more."
A home that's in poor shape might not be a bad buy if the buyer understands the risks, he adds.
Sometimes, though, those risks can be difficult to assess if the term of vacancy isn't known or the water, sewer, electricity and gas have been shut off. The utilities not being in service is "an interesting part of this equation that people miss all the time," Israel says.
Buy or sell
The bottom line for buyers is that they need to "buy smart," to use Israel's term, researching neighborhoods and being aware of a home's actual condition beyond its cosmetic appearance.
The bottom line for sellers, Cammarosano says, is that they need to get serious about pricing, cleaning, decluttering, staging and improving the value and desirability of their home.
"That's getting real," he says. "And if that's not what you want, don't sell it."

Mo. judge to hear motions in case against bishop
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? A Jackson County judge was scheduled to consider motions to dismiss a misdemeanor charge against a Roman Catholic bishop in Kansas City who is accused of violating Missouri's mandatory reporter law.
Bishop Robert Finn and the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph were charged last year with failing to report to the Missouri Children's Division hundreds of photos of young children found on the laptop computer of the Rev. Shawn Ratigan, including a series that showed the exposed genitals of a girl believed to be 3 or 4 years old.
Finn is the highest-ranking U.S. Catholic official to be accused of shielding an abusive priest, and a conviction could send shock waves through a church hierarchy unaccustomed to being held legally accountable for failing to report suspected sexual abuse by clergy members.
Finn's attorneys have filed motions to dismiss the charge, saying Missouri's mandatory reporter law is unconstitutionally vague. They also seek to have the case dismissed because they said prosecutors had failed to state an offense committed by the bishop.
Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said the state Supreme Court already has ruled the mandatory reporter law meets constitutional requirements.
Finn has acknowledged that he was told about the images on Ratigan's computer in December 2010, several months before the diocese turned over a disk containing the photos to local police. The bishop also has acknowledged that a parish principal raised concerns about Ratigan's behavior around children in May 2010, half a year before the photos were found.
Instead of ordering the photos to be turned over to police, or telling the Children's Division about the pictures, Finn sent Ratigan out of state for a psychiatric evaluation. When Ratigan returned to Missouri, Finn sent him to the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Eucharist, where he would say Mass for the sisters and be away from children.
The diocese went to police with the photos last may after the church received reports that Ratigan had violated orders from the diocese to stay away from children.

Five Fun Games For Younger Soccer Players | Church Sports ...
All of the below games could be played with kids of any level but would particularly be good for kids 6 or under.? Enjoy!
1.? Pirate Treasure (Link); Skills Developed: Dribbling, defense
Create a grid about 30X30. Set up about 10 tall cones (the treasure) along one side of the grid. On the opposite side have each player (the pirates) start with a ball. 2-3 players will start inside the grid with an alternate color jersey on. They are defending the treasure (tall cones) along the side of the grid.
- On the coaches command, the pirates attempt to dribble past the defenders in attempt to take the treasure.
- To take the treasure the players must knock down the cone with the ball.
- Once they have knocked down the cone they must pick up the cone and take it back to their starting point while dribbling the ball.
- If the pirates lose the ball by the defenders, they must start back over at the original starting point.
2.? Snake in the Grass (Link); Skills Developed: Movement, spacing, dribbling
Create a small grid approximately 15X15 yards. All of the players should be inside the grid. The coach should designate two players to be the ?snakes? by lying on their stomachs. Each of the players begin with one of their hands on the snakes in the grass.
When the coach yells ?SNAKE IN THE GRASS? the non-snake players attempt to avoid the snakes as the snakes attempt to slither around on their stomach and touch a non-snake player. As a player is touched, that player too becomes a snake. The activity continues until everyone is a snake.
3.? Red Light/Green Light; Skills Developed: Dribbling
This well known children?s game makes a great drill. ?All players start on one side of the
field with a ball. ?Coach yells ?Green Light? and turns her back to the players. ?Yell ?Red Light? and then turn back
around. ?All players should have moved forward and now be standing still with one foot on the ball. Any player still
moving or without his or her ball, gets sent back to the starting line.
4.? Traffic; Skills Developed: Dribbling, spacing, vision
Create a square playing area roughly 10 ft by 10 ft. Divide the players into two groups. ?Set
one group up on the north side of the square and the other team on the east side. Each player has a ball. ?On the
start all players must cross the square, make the turn when they get to the other side and come back. ?Make it a
race to see which team can be the first to get its players across and back 3 times.
5.? Pass to Score; Skills Developed: Passing, spacing, vision
Divide the players into 2 equal teams and establish a playing area roughly half the size of
the field. ?Have the players spread out all over the playing area. ?Toss the ball in to start. ?The goal is to gain control
of the ball and make 3 passes in a row between teammates. ?If the defense intercepts then that team tries to make
3 passes in a row. ?After a score of 3 successful passes, the coach restarts with a thrown in. ?Play for a certain
amount of time or until 10 points are scored.

Product Review: Antidote Chocolates | Flavorful World food and ...

Flavor-packed and sustainably-produced, Antidote Chocolates invites consumers to ?Empower your inner goddess.? Available in 77%, 84%, and 100% organic certified cacao derived from beans originating in the Ecuadorian Amazon, this product would seem to be a dark chocolate lover?s dream come true.
Those who hear the word ?chocolates? and come looking for overtly sugary, ganache-filled treats won?t find them here. In Antidote chocolates, sweetness exists mainly on the milder side, and is paired with ingredients like rose salt, lavender, and gooseberry. Unlike many candy manufacturers, Antidote chocolatiers seem less obsessed with creating artificially sweet treats than finding healthy, tantalizing combinations of fruits, nuts, florals, and spices to blend with the raw organic cane sugar used to sweeten its product. These dark chocolates span a wide range of flavor combinations, some of which, like Banana and Cayenne or Mango and Juniper might seem unorthodox on first hearing, but the proof is in the tasting. And the taste is both unique enough to be memorable and varied enough to be exciting every time.
Notable is that Antidote Chocolates are more than a tasty indulgence.? Powdered moringa in each bar delivers a dose of vitamins, chlorophyll, antioxidants, and other health benefits.? Couple this with cocoa being a source of iron, fiber, and assorted minerals, and this product is as much a powerhouse of nutrition as of innovative ingredient blends.? The samples that I tasted for the purpose of this review include?Ginger and Gooseberry (84%), Lavender and Red Salt (84%), Red Flower and Berry (77%), Rose Salt and Lemon (77%), and Raw and Roasted Organic Cacao (84%).? In each instance, the flavors present acted as excellent complement to the taste of the raw cacao. The essences of ginger, lemon, and rose salt infused the chocolate with added flavor dimensions.? The addition of pieces of gooseberry or salt crystals lent a pleasing textural element that added an exciting sense of anticipation to each bite. Whereas a single square of many other dark chocolates has sufficed with me in the past, the unique flavors of Antidote chocolates compelled me to repeat samplings.
An added bonus of enjoying this product, one admittedly one having nothing to do with flavor, is its goddess theme, wherein the chocolate bars are named for ancient female deities like Gaia, Alethia, and Kakia. Available individually or in bulk sets of three, ten, or twelve bars, this product line casts an obvious and affectionate eye toward making room in our hectic daily routines for a measure of attention to nature and wellness, as well as things delicious.? For the dark chocolate lover in you or in the ones you love, there may exist a greater gift than to ingest the nutrient-rich power of a goddess, but after tasting this product, I?m hard pressed to imagine what it could be.

Military Maneuver Or Flyby Gone Awry? Dramatic Footage Of Afghan Chopper Crash
The video shows an AH-64 Apache helicopter swooping extremely low over an outpost in the snowy mountains of southeastern Paktika Province on February 6.
The website Military.com says the pilot was attempting a maneuver called a "return to target," although less military-savvy viewers would be forgiven for thinking that the pilot(s) are hot-dogging it for the delight of their buddies.
Laughter and a "Hell, yeah!" can be heard from the folks watching on the ground before the crash and then "Oh, God" and some other choice words after the impact.
Incredibly, officials of the U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan say no one on the ground was injured (although how the man standing in the snow at :23 seconds managed to duck in time is beyond me) and that the helicopter crew survived the incident, which is under investigation.
The $20 million helicopter wasn't so lucky, I'm guessing.

Be Don Draper in 'Mad Men' 8-bit ?video game
17 hrs.

Matthew Hawkins
Fans of AMC's hit show "Mad Men" are probably wondering where their video game adaptation is. Surprisingly, none have been announced. So until that day comes (no guarantees if it ever will, by the way), we have yet another excellent production by The Fine Brothers.
You may be familiar with the handiwork of Benny and Rafi Fine, via our look at their interactive ode to "Twilight" from a few years ago. Their take on "Saved By The Bell" has been equally popular, and don't forget ?Harry Potter" by Doctor Octoroc, the person responsible for all the Fine's music and animation.
8bit iterations on contemporary subject matter, even it has nothing to do with gaming, are hardly rare. The fact that the following is actually playable is what makes it stand out:
The game takes places right after season four and has the player assuming the role of Don Draper. The goal is ?to save the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce advertising firm from oblivion. But to do so, Don's creativity, confidence, and inner peace stats must be max. And to do that, conversations must be had with other characters in the game, in a fashion that Draper is best known for.
Three different endings are possible, and it's a great way to get reacquainted with the subject matter before season five premiers this upcoming Sunday.

SEATTLE (AP) ? A day before the public learned the name of the soldier accused of methodically slaughtering 16 civilians in Afghanistan, his lawyer called a news conference and sketched a different portrait of Robert Bales: that of a loving father and devoted husband who had been traumatized by a comrade's injury and sent into combat one too many times.
The move was classic John Henry Browne. The charming, sometimes brash, media-savvy defense attorney had yet to even meet his client and was already attempting to shape public perceptions.
"His best work is not in a court of law, but really in a court of public opinion. He's a master at humanizing his client, and that's an important role," said Dan Satterberg, chief prosecutor in Seattle's King County, where Browne is based. "He is accessible and quotable. And he loves to talk to the media. He doesn't waste any time getting a positive portrayal of his client."
Six-foot-6 and seven times married, with a penchant for long, white scarves, Browne cuts a flamboyant figure in Seattle legal circles and has represented some notorious criminals, including serial killer Ted Bundy and the teenage thief known as the Barefoot Bandit.
Browne, 65, has obtained remarkable results for some of his clients, but his aggressive courtroom style can also rub prosecutors and judges the wrong way. In a drug case last summer, a mistrial was declared after he questioned the judge's competence in open court and a juror was overheard saying he wanted to punch the lawyer in the nose.
His new client, Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, a 38-year-old Army sniper from Washington state, could be charged as early as this week in the March 11 shooting rampage, a crime that has strained relations between the U.S. and Afghanistan and threatened to alter the course of the war.
Browne met with Bales for the first time Monday, conferring with him behind bars at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. While any trial is months away, some wonder whether the lawyer's sometimes abrasive behavior will sit well with the more formal culture of a military court, in which the jury consists entirely of soldiers.
By his own count, Browne has appeared in military court only three times in a career of more than four decades.
"He pushes prosecutors and judges, and his success is partially due to that," said John Wolfe, who worked for Browne in the 1970s. "His zealousness can cause people to make mistakes." But he added: "I fully expect he's going to adapt his style to the decorum required in a military trial."
Allen Ressler, a Seattle attorney who went to American University Law School with Browne and was his law partner years ago, put it this way: "He's not always the most pleasant human being in the world, but he knows what he needs to do to get results."
Browne has been known to turn around in court and roll his eyes if he dislikes what he is hearing from the judge. In the drug case that ended in a mistrial, he simply refused to continue participating because he disagreed with several rulings. He sat down and did the same thing in a 1979 murder case.
"He makes harsh statements sometimes, statements some people feel might be disrespectful," Wolfe said. "If he thinks a judge is out of line, he'll say, 'You're out of line.' He is passionate about his defense work, and when he thinks it's appropriate, he'll call a spade a spade."
Though friendly with reporters, Browne can at times be prickly with them, and isn't above calling one a "pest" for telephoning too often.
Several colleagues say that he clearly enjoys the publicity from big cases but that his real motivation lies deeper, in a belief in his clients and their right to a fair trial.
"John has always had high-profile cases because he's really good," said Anne Bremner, a Seattle lawyer who was Browne's fifth wife. "But often in high-profile cases, they can be a platform for important discussions on broad issues. Being part of that public discussion and potential institutional changes is important to him."
Most recently, Browne represented Colton Harris-Moore, the Barefoot Bandit who stole airplanes, boats and cars during a two-year run from the law. By painting a picture of the thief as someone who had been neglected as a boy, Browne and his co-counsel persuaded a judge to give Harris-Moore a prison term at the low end of the sentencing range ? seven years.
Browne was so persuasive the judge called the defendant "a triumph of the human spirit" simply because Harris-Moore grew up to be a thief rather than, say, a serial killer.
One of Browne's biggest cases involved Washington state's worst mass murder, the slaying of 13 people at a Seattle gambling club in 1983. At the end of the trial, Browne had the mother of his client, Benjamin Ng, bow to the jurors and ask them to spare his son from execution, recalled Bremner. Ng was sentenced to life in prison.
In the 1970s, Browne came to represent Bundy when he was under investigation for killings in Washington state. Bundy ultimately confessed to dozens of murders around the country and was executed in Florida's electric chair in 1989.
A Tennessee native, Browne graduated from the University of Denver, then got his law degree in 1971. He worked as an assistant attorney general in Olympia, Wash., and then as chief trial attorney in the public defender's office in Seattle before entering private practice.
He has benefited from the assistance of a series of sharp associate lawyers, most recently Emma Scanlan, who has handled many of the nuts and bolts of their cases while leaving the public pronouncements to him.
So far, Browne is doing a good job countering the portrait of Bales that has emerged in leaks from anonymous U.S. officials, said Dan Conway, a former Marine and a military lawyer. But talking so much about his client ? for example, saying that Bales remembers little about the attack ? is risky, Conway said.
Military investigators have sole access to witnesses in Afghanistan and can start collecting evidence to contradict Browne's suggestion that the shootings may have been what psychiatrists call a dissociative event.
"You want to humanize your client, but you don't want to give away the whole playbook," Conway said.

Vintage Inspired Baby Shower ? Todayi
This past weekend, my family threw me an amazing baby shower at my parents? house. It was so fun and was a great success despite the pouring rain. All of our guests were crowded inside, umbrellas were stacked in this huge trash can right next to the door, and loads of coats were hanging on the racks! (Good thing we had those coat racks!) Anyway, despite all the chaos in the beginning?it was worthwhile. Also, it was literally the second time my family and my husband?s family saw each other..the last time was our wedding ?a year and a half ago! Haha. Here?s some of the snap shots I took via Instragram! (Freakin? love that app.)
My creative sister set up a little candy bar so guests can take home a little somethin.?
There are the coat racks before the guests arrived! I love pinwheels!
Our little game table. My family LOVES games!
An ?About to Pop? sign that our friend Ashley made. Thanks Ashley for all of your help! You are so awesome!
Guest book for friends/family to leave parenting advice or tips for us. Super cute idea!
Since we couldn?t set up outside, Martin and Eddie set up in the garage. I thought it turned out pretty nicely! Good job guys!
We had a Taco and Nacho Bar! It was incredibly delicious. My dad was the genius behind it all and it was a BIG hit!
My mom picked up this fruit tart cake from this bakery in Pomona. THE. BEST. CAKE. EVER! And, I?m not a cake eater..so that says a lot.
Also, did you catch the big reveal?!?
We have a name picked out for our little girl! A really, super Catholic one.
Happy Wednesday to you.

Clinical trial examines antioxidant effects for Alzheimer's disease on cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers
ScienceDaily (Mar. 19, 2012) ? An antioxidant combination of vitamin E, vitamin C and ?-lipoic acid (E/C/ALA) was not associated with changes in some cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers related to Alzheimer disease in a randomized controlled trial, according to a study published Online First by Archives of Neurology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
Oxidative damage in the brain is associated with aging and is widespread in Alzheimer disease (AD) patients. Some observational studies have suggested that an antioxidant-rich diet may reduce the risk of AD, but antioxidant randomized clinical trials in AD have had mixed results, the authors write in their study background.
Douglas R. Galasko, M.D., of the University of California, San Diego, and colleagues examined changes in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers related to Alzheimer disease and oxidative stress, cognition and function.
The study included 78 patients from the Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study (ADCS) Antioxidant Biomarker study who were divided into one of three groups: 800 IU/per day of vitamin E (?-tocopherol) plus 500 mg/per day of vitamin C plus 900 mg/per day of ?-lipoic acid (E/C/ALA); 400 mg of coenzyme Q (CoQ) three times a day; or placebo. Sixty-six patients provided serial CSF specimens adequate for biochemical analyses during the 16-week trial.
"The combination of E/C/ALA did not affect CSF biomarkers related to ??, tau or P-tau (which are related to AD)," the authors comment.
The E/C/ALA group did see a lowering of CSF F2-isoprostane levels suggesting a reduction of oxidative stress in the brain, the results indicate. However, the treatment raised caution about faster cognitive decline as assessed by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE).
"It is unclear whether the relatively small reduction in CSF F2-isoprostane level seen in this study may lead to clinical benefits in AD. The more rapid MMSE score decline raises a caution and indicates that cognitive performance would need to be assessed if a longer-term clinical trial of this antioxidant combination is considered," the authors conclude.
The authors also note the results indicate that while CoQ was safe and well tolerated in patients, the absence of a biomarker signal in CSF suggests that CoQ, at the tested dose, does not improve indices of oxidative stress or neurodegeneration.

Do You Have The Skills Needed In Parenting? | Door Bell ...
You have probably encountered this line a number of times before. That is, that parenting being the most difficult job in the world. It is not a regular job where you need to apply, get hired and get paid at the end of the month. But similar to any job, you will need a number of skills to carry out the duties and responsibilities that are associated with it. You, being your own boss, should learn them if you want to make sure your kids grow up happy and successful. First on the list is communication skills. You don?t really have to master the art of public speaking, but you need to know the importance of communication as a two-way process. You should know how to listen. You should also learn how to communicate well, regardless of the age of your children.
Patience is another skill that every parent should have. It is something that you can learn and that you must learn. In essence, it is the ability to wait for something to happen without being upset or angry. As a mom or dad, there are things that you would want your kids to learn. And there are times when even with all your efforts, you still don?t see any improvement with what you want to see. This is one situation where patience matters a lot. Things such as the formation of values or total transformation if need be, don?t happen overnight. As such you will need all the patience you can give to avoid frustration. You also need to be skillful in terms of disciplining your kids and yourself, too. Consistency is crucial in forming good habits in kids. And even though it can be tough, you should try to learn how to discipline yourself enough to avoid breaking your own rules when your kids? persistence becomes too difficult to handle.
Furthermore, to be able to parent happy and successful kids, you would need to have multitasking skills. Every mom and dad would be called to take on different roles as they strive to become the best parents. Therefore, don?t focus on just being the breadwinner of the family or the cook. You have to be a friend, a coach, an adviser and a lot more. The art of positive parenting should be the main driver in families, and not the traditional authoritative parenting. The cliche is not bound to change, being a parent is never easy. But being equipped with the right skills can certainly contribute to a less stressful job as a parent.
