Bad news for local gymnastics enthusiasts.
The Ontario Winter Games event schedule will be short a sport after Gymnastics Ontario withdrew from next month?s Games.
Erin Hamilton, the acting director of Games for Sport Alliance Ontario, says the departure was ?due to conflicting competitions and low athlete numbers.?
The men?s and women?s artistic gymnastics and women?s rhythmic gymnastics were to be held March 9 at the Buell Fitness and Aquatic Centre in Borden.
The International Gymnix and Gymnix Classic also runs from March 8 until 11 in Montreal, although Hamilton says there may be multiple conflicting competitions.
She says it has become increasingly difficult in recent years for Gymnastics Ontario, a long-time participant and supporter of the Ontario Winter Games, to send a sufficient number of its best athletes.
Hamilton says the withdrawal will not affect the games in any way other than the loss of those particular events. She says a settlement was negotiated and there will be no negative impact on the Games? budget.
She says the organizing committee is continuing to plan for the remaining 26 sports, which will see more than 2,000 athletes compete in the region.
