ViewSonic's ViewPhone 4e hands-on (video)

The ViewSonic ViewPhone 4e -- the downmarket sibling of the ViewPhone 4s -- launched at MWC today and unlike the 4s, the 4e was essentially feature complete. This dual SIM set will ship with Android 2.3.x Gingerbread, a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 display, a 3-megapixel camera, and an FM radio. We had a chance to see it in both yellow and a truly garish pink hue and the housings are impressively solid and while they may not come in our favorite colors, they're at least fun. While not as tack sharp as the ViewPhone 4s' IPS display, the 4e looked just fine and the the quick UI tour didn't show any obvious slowdowns or stuttering from its 650Mhz CPU. We're expecting this to launch in Europe before June for about $350.
Zach Honig contributed to this report.

Stern: Silver worthy successor as NBA commissioner

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? David Stern will reveal only two things about his future as NBA commissioner.

He'll be retired within five years, and he hopes Adam Silver replaces him.

Stern endorsed Silver for the job on Saturday, calling the deputy commissioner and 20-year employee of the NBA a "first-rate, top of the class executive."

"I guess I would say that one of the things that a good CEO does, and I try to be a good CEO, is provide his board with a spectacular choice for its successor, and I think I've done that, and that's Adam," Stern said, with Silver sitting at a table to his right.

"That's ultimately, if I had the decision, if I were doing it myself, he would be the commissioner."

However, Stern said the choice would be left to the owners, and he's given them no indication when they will have to make it.

Stern committed to a minimum of five more years on the job after the previous collective bargaining agreement was ratified in 2005. He said he's told them nothing now, though he said the discussion would come "very soon." He repeated what he's said previously about not being around to handle the next round of negotiations, which could be in 2017 if either side exercises its right to opt out of the 10-year deal.

"I'm not going to be here when it either is or isn't reopened in six years," he said.

Silver was already the lead negotiator during the recent labor talks, leading owners through a five-month lockout to a new deal in which they saved about $280 million a year in player salary costs.

Stern has leaned on his longtime assistant and the former president of NBA Entertainment more frequently in recent years, often leaving it to him to answer difficult questions. He passed the microphone to Silver on a couple of occasions Saturday for questions about the league's future that Stern, 69, may not be around to answer.

He has plenty of business to complete now.

He will meet Sunday with leadership from Sacramento and the Maloof family, who own the Kings, as the sides try to beat a March 1 deadline to complete a plan to finance a new arena the city needs to keep the team.

"We'd like the city, on behalf of the Maloofs, to make the largest possible contribution," Stern said. "The city would like the Maloofs to make the largest ? both have come up with very substantial contributions. It's really getting there. It's just not there yet. And we're looking for ways, imaginative ways, to bridge the gap."

Also Saturday:

?Stern said the league is in discussions with one unnamed group, with another sitting behind, for the sale of the Hornets. He is optimistic a deal can get done in a week to 10 days.

?Stern doesn't see expanding beyond 30 teams in North America, but neither he nor Silver would rule out overseas in the next decade.

?Silver said the league is working to schedule games in London next season, after this season's games at the O2Arena had to be scrapped because of the condensed schedule.

?Silver said Nike and Adidas, in the wake of reports they try to steer stars to large markets, have assured the league that the incentives they build into contracts are based on winning, not market size.

?Stern said the league will return to Orlando for another All-Star game, though didn't say when. The game hadn't been here in 20 years, but Stern said there's "no better building in the world" than the new Amway Center.

?Silver said the league is in discussions about playing preseason games next season in China, perhaps in Shanghai, where former Houston All-Star Yao Ming owns the Chinese Basketball Association team.

Resort Finance | Help 1 Service Project

A resort finance loan is designed specifically for businesses who are trying to start a resort or businesses which are looking to expand on an existing resort. Typically a resort loan is issued by a commercial lender. In some situations a business looking to get a resort finance loan may utilize a commercial loan broker. While using a commercial broker is not necessary the practice can lead to an improved chance of getting an approval, faster approvals and lower interest rates. This is possible because a broker will work with more than one commercial lender to get the best terms possible.

A resort financial loan is considered a fairly risky type of financing. As a result of this most lenders have extremely stiff policies surrounding them. Businesses with low credit scores often find it difficult if not possible to obtain a resort financing loan.

In most situations if they are able to get a loan it is at a high interest rate. Resorts which are looking to finance an expansion with a resort finance loan may be able to get better interest rates if the resort is already showing a profit and they can demonstrate how the expansion will improve their profitability.

Due to recession, most of the people are thinking about their money being bound or lost while making any sort of investment in the market share, since no one is pretty sure about the Economy turndown, or they don?t know when they will be able to see some improvement, this is the only reason why Resort Financing is becoming one of the top selling word these days.

Deadly Duo: Mixing Alcohol and Prescription Drugs Can Result in Addiction or Accidental Death

News | Health

Alcohol and Xanax, both found in Whitney Houston's hotel room right after she died, inhibit the central nervous system and depend on the same enzyme for bodily clearance

Image: ? iStockphoto/orcearoorcearo

The mystery of Whitney Houston's death will not be solved for several weeks, as the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office awaits a full toxicology report. But many experts speculate that the singer's tragic demise involved a deadly cocktail of alcohol and prescription drugs, including Xanax.

Houston wouldn't be the first star to suffer such a fate: Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson and Anna Nicole Smith are all thought to have died in part from prescription drug overdoses, which can involve painkillers, sedatives and stimulants, often in combination with alcohol. But the problem extends far beyond Hollywood. In 2007 some 27,000 Americans died from unintentional prescription drug overdoses?making prescription drugs a more common cause of accidental death in many states than car crashes are.

A slippery slope
Although sedatives are thought to have played a role in Houston?s death, most prescription drug overuse involves opioid painkillers. Approximately 3 to 5 percent of people who take pain medication eventually end up addicted, according to Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, an arm of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. And "individuals who have a past history of a substance-use disorder?from smoking, drinking or other drugs?are at greater risk," she says. Addiction to other classes of prescription drugs such as sedatives, stimulants and sleep medications is thought to be less common?but it occurs, and even users who do not become compulsively addicted can, over time, become physically dependent and experience intense withdrawal symptoms when their prescriptions run out. They might also develop drug tolerance, the need to take higher doses over time to feel the same effects.

Other people start taking prescription drugs just to get high, perhaps in part because they have the (false) notion that prescription drugs are safer to experiment with than are illicit drugs. "They take them for recreational purposes, and then a portion of them find 'Wow, I can't stop using this,'" says Jon Morgenstern, director of addiction treatment at the Columbia University Medical Center.

It is unclear how Houston developed her substance problems, but like many other addicts, she eventually began mixing drugs along with alcohol. Many prescription drug users who are not addicted or dependent consume alcohol concurrently as well, despite medical advice against it. According to a 2008 study published by researchers at Brown University and the University of Rhode Island, 60 percent of people who regularly take prescription drugs known to interact with alcohol also drink, and 5 percent have at least three drinks in a row when they do.

Prescription drugs and alcohol can be a dangerous combination, Volkow says. Painkillers and booze are perhaps the worst to mix, because both slow breathing by different mechanisms and inhibit the coughing reflex, creating "a double-whammy effect," she says, that can stop breathing altogether. Alcohol also interacts with anti-anxiety drugs (including Xanax), antipsychotics, antidepressants, sleep medications and muscle relaxants?intensifying the drugs' sedative effects, causing drowsiness and dizziness, and making falls and accidents more likely. A 2010 study published in the Canadian Journal of Public Health reported that automobile drivers were much more likely to weave and speed if they were under the influence of drugs like Xanax in addition to alcohol than if they had consumed alcohol alone. And according to a 2011 study published in the AmericanJournal of Therapeutics, people who visited an emergency room after taking too much of the sleeping drug Ambien were more than twice as likely to end up in an intensive care unit if they had also consumed alcohol, compared with Ambien-takers who had not had anything to drink.

Bacterial cheaters do not prosper

CHEATERS never prosper - at least not in the lab. A new finding contradicts the notion that cooperative organisms are vulnerable to freeloaders.

Some bacteria send out signals that help a lab culture as a whole adapt to its environment, so other bugs ought to be able to benefit without wasting any of their own resources on signals.

David Van Dyken at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, studied the genetics of bacterial cultures and found this wasn't true.

Surprisingly, no known "cheating" genotype was common enough to suggest that it was an old-timer in the culture. Instead, cheaters are present simply because they arise through mutation faster than natural selection can purge them from the population. Cheating may not be a stable strategy (American Naturalist, DOI: 10.1086/664609).

Iraqis inspect the damage following a blast in central Baghdad on Thursday.

By msnbc.com news services

Updated at 5:25 a.m. ET: BAGHDAD -- A swift series of bombings and shootings killed?dozens of?people across Iraq early Thursday in attacks that mostly appeared to target police, officials said.

At least 50 people were killed,?police and hospital sources told Reuters.

In the worst attack, a car bomb went off near a security checkpoint in Baghdad's downtown shopping district of Karradah killing at least?nine people. Twenty-six people were wounded in that attack, including four policemen, the officials said.

Associated Press footage of the scene showed blood-covered people walking away, and storefronts at several nearby shops were damaged. A gray cloud of smoke hung over the blast site where cars were charred and crumpled.

At least eight more bombs exploded during the morning across Baghdad, killing 18 more people.

Silenced pistols
And on opposite sides of the capital, gunmen with silenced pistols killed a total of eight policemen at security checkpoints, officials said.

"What is happening today are not simple security violations ? it is a huge security failure and disaster," said Ahmed al-Tamimi, who was working at an Education Ministry office a block away from a restaurant that was bombed in the Shiite neighborhood of Kazimiyah in northern Baghdad. He described a hellish scene of human flesh and pools of blood at the scene.

"We want to know: What were the thousands of policemen and soldiers in Baghdad doing today while the terrorists were roaming the city and spreading violence?" al-Tamimi said.

The violence did not stop at Baghdad. Attacks in Baqouba, Kirkuk and in Salahuddin provinces were also reported in the relentless string of assaults that unfolded over a two-hour period.

Officials in Baqouba, 35 miles northeast of the capital, said a suicide bomber blew up his car outside a police station near a market. Two people were killed and eight wounded.

In the ethnically mixed city of Kirkuk, 180 miles north of Baghdad, two police patrols hit roadside bombs. Twenty policemen were injured in the attacks, said police Maj. Gen. Sarhat Qadir.

US Embassy in Iraq facing cuts amid ongoing violence

Bombs in the town of Tuz Khormato outside Kirkuk, wounded three guards outside the office of a Kurdish political party. And south of Baghdad, eight policemen were wounded by a roadside bomb in the town of Madain, said Mayor Jalal Baban. Madain is about 14 miles southeast of the capital.

On Sunday, a suicide car bombing killed 19 people at a Baghdad police academy.

Tensions have been high in Iraq as it struggles with its worst political turmoil in a year in the aftermath of the U.S. troop withdrawal nearly nine years after the invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein.

Decorated former Navy SEAL marksman Chris Kyle, author of a new book about the super-secret military personnel who are assigned the most-dangerous missions, talks about some of the bloodiest battles of the war in Iraq.

Attacks against mostly Shiite targets surged after Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government moved against senior members of the Sunni-backed Iraqiya political bloc.

While violence has ebbed since the height of the war, al-Qaida affliliated Sunni Islamist insurgents are still capable of major attacks. They often target government buildings and Iraqi security forces.

Political turbulence
Widespread violence has decreased since just a few years ago when Iraq teetered on the brink of civil war. But bombings and deadly shootings still happen almost daily.

The country has been besieged by political turbulence that began the day after U.S. troops pulled out of Iraq, when an arrest warrant was issued for Sunni Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi on charges he commandeered death squads targeting security forces and government officials.

Al-Hashemi, the country's highest-ranking Sunni, has denied the charges that he described as politically motivated, and blamed the Shiite-led government of trying to unseat him.

Experts worry the case will hike Iraq's already-simmering sectarian tensions.

T-Mobile asks FCC to block Verizon-cable deal

(AP) ? T-Mobile USA, which just had its acquisition by AT&T blocked by regulators, is urging the federal government to block another deal in the wireless world: Verizon's planned purchase spectrum from cable companies for $3.9 billion.

In a filing late Tuesday, T-Mobile USA said the Federal Communications Commission should stop the deal between Verizon Wireless, Comcast Corp., Time Warner Cable Inc., Bright House Networks and Cox Communications because it would place an "excessive concentration" of wireless spectrum in Verizon's hands.

Nine public interest groups also filed motions to block the deal on Tuesday, ahead of a filing deadline on Wednesday.

With more wireless spectrum, a phone company can raise download speeds and serve more data-hungry devices like smartphones and laptops with cellular broadband.

Verizon Wireless, the country's No. 1 cell phone company, already has a relatively large amount of spectrum, while T-Mobile, the No. 4, does not.

T-Mobile's petition to block the deal is the first by a major Verizon Wireless competitor. Two weeks ago, T-Mobile joined Sprint Nextel Corp., the No. 3 wireless carrier, and DirecTV Group Inc., the satellite TV company, in asking the FCC to make Verizon and the cable companies produce more information about the deal.

Last week, a New Jersey's Division of Rate Counsel, a state agency that advocates for consumers, asked the FCC to block the deal, also citing the spectrum accumulation issue.

Verizon Wireless has defended the deal, saying it means unused spectrum will become available to wireless subscribers.

In early December, Verizon Wireless announced a deal to buy spectrum from Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks for $3.6 billion. The cable companies had bought the spectrum jointly at an FCC auction in 2006, with loose plans to start a wireless company or form a joint venture with one. Those plans never came to fruition.

The parties said they hoped to close the deal by the middle of this year. But opposition to it has been mounting, with T-Mobile's petition to block it being the most salient move so far.

Verizon later struck a similar but separate deal to buy spectrum held by Cox for $315 million. Cox had started setting up its own wireless service, but gave up last year, saying it would be too small to compete against the big cellphone companies.

Under the deals, Verizon Wireless and the cable companies will be marketing each other's services in their stores, even though Verizon Communications Inc., the New York-based majority owner of Verizon Wireless, competes with the cable companies in providing pay-TV and broadband service.

Shares of Verizon Communications slipped 10 cents to $38.39 in morning trading Wednesday.

Rush Limbaugh on Santorum and Satan (Politico)

Rush Limbaugh said on his radio show Tuesday that Rick Santorum will have to explain his warning that ?Satan has his sights on the United States of America.?

?It?s part of the predictable attempt to impugn Santorum as an absolute religious nut and wacko,? Limbaugh said. ?But he did say these things, and he?ll have to have an answer for these things when queried.?

The speech Santorum made at Ave Maria University in 2008 saying that Satan has set his sights on the United States exploded across the web and headlined the Drudge Report on Tuesday.

?This is a spiritual war. And the Father of Lies has his sights on what you would think the Father of Lies would have his sights on: a good, decent, powerful, influential country - the United States of America. If you were Satan, who would you attack in this day and age?? the Republican presidential contender said in August 2008. ?He attacks all of us and he attacks all of our institutions.?

?Satan is attacking the great institutions of America, using those great vices of pride, vanity, and sensuality as the root to attack all of these strong plants that have so deeply rooted in the American tradition,? Santorum added.

Limbaugh, who said the focus on Santorum?s speech shows that a ?double standard does exist,? added that the former Pennsylvania senator?s comments are ?not the kind of stuff you hear a presidential candidate talk about.?

?That stuff is out there,? Limbaugh said, according to a transcript of the show. ?It?s headlined on Drudge and the Left has it, and Santorum will have to deal with it. He?ll have to answer it. I don?t know. It?s just not the kind of stuff you hear a presidential candidate talk about. It?s not ordinary in that sense.?

In the speech, Santorum also said Satan was ?the most and first successful? in conquering academia, which he said ?a long time ago fell.?

The next, Santorum said, ?was the church.?

?We look at the shape of mainline Protestantism in this country, and it is in shambles. It is gone from the world of Christianity as I see it,? Santorum said.

Travel Insurance ? General Insurance Blog

If you have any kind of problem while abroad, whether it is a medical emergency, an accident where you damage someone elses property, or have some of your belongings stolen, it can cost a fortune to sort it out. For example, an air ambulance from the East coast of the USA could cost you the thick end of fifty thousand pounds. However, if you have a travel insurance policy, then you do not need to worry about the threat of a financial emergency whilst abroad.

Many people fail to take out travel insurance cover in the mistaken belief that their other insurance policies, such as health insurance or life insurance, will offer them sufficient cover abroad, when in fact this is rarely the case. A typical travel insurance policy should offer:

Emergency medical expenses cover, which includes emergency medical costs and an airlift back to the UK for further treatment if necessary

A twenty four hour emergency helpline, manned 365 days a year

Liability insurance, in case you accidentally damage property belonging to someone else

Insurance against the loss or theft of your belongings

Cancellation and curtailment insurance, in case your holiday plans go awry for whatever reason

Other things that it might cover include personal accident cover, legal expenses insurance, and financial protection against the likelihood of your airline going bankrupt before or during your holiday.

However, it is extremely rare for travel insurance policies to pay out on claims arising from drink or drug abuse.

Also, if you have not taken sensible precautions against the damaging or theft of your belongings, then the insurer may not be willing to pay for replacements, so it can pay to be careful even if you are insured.

The best way to get a good deal on your travel insurance is to shop around online to find the right insurance at the right price. Avoid getting the cheapest insurance if it does not provide you with all the cover that you require, as this could turn out to be a false economy should anything go wrong on holiday.

If you are making more than one trip per year, you might want to consider taking out an annual travel insurance policy, rather than a separate policy for every trip. Not only will this save you the hassle of having to sort out travel insurance every time you leave the country, but it can also save you a lot of money as well.

For great deals on holiday insurance with a wide range of activities covered as standard, visit Go Travel Insurance.

Reasons Why You Should Become a Technical Writer

Up-and-coming industries all come up with products and services that are complicated and confusing to the simple mind. When it comes to the latest technologies for gadgets, machinery, tools, devices and appliances, we would depend on technical writers to explain the terms and instructions in writing. If you find that you have a thing for writing but don?t see yourself being an author, maybe you should consider becoming a technical writer. Why?

For one, the demand for writers in every industry increases each year putting this career in the hot seat of the market. In simple terms this means that you would always be able to find a job in this industry. In addition to that, you would be able to make a good living off this job and support not only yourself but your family as well. With the right amount of education and experience, you would be able to pull up about $ 90,000 a year.

Aside from that, many technical writers work from home, hence, they are given the benefit of skipping the early morning traffic and working their own hours.

This gives you the convenience to work as and when you want within the given deadline. Also, if you choose to become a freelancer, you get to pick your jobs and work with the industries of your choice. You would be your own boss and be given the opportunity to hold another job as well in tough times.

Furthermore, as you would be writing manuals, instructions, guides, reports or pamphlets, you would be exposed to many different things each and every day. Your job would take you places and give you the chance to know how new gadgets work. Finally, you would be given that self-satisfaction feeling once you complete your work and see it in final print.

At the end of the day, you would be able to be proud of where you are and what you?ve done.

In conclusion, there are many reasons as to why you should take up technical writing and even more benefits to it. So if writing is your thing then give this career a try and you might find that you like it.

'Embarrassing' Facebook Photos Inspire Aaron Olson To Sue Uncle (VIDEO)

Nearly everyone on Facebook has been tagged with an embarrasing photo, but most people don't sue the person who tagged them.

Minneapolis resident Eric Olson did. And the person he sued was his uncle, Randall LaBrie.

After LaBrie posted childhood photos of Olson in front of a Christmas tree and added snarky comments, Olson got angry and sued his uncle for harassment, according to Newser.com.

Sadly for Olson, he not only lost the case but his appeal to a higher court was also denied.

The state Court of Appeals decreed that "comments that are mean and disrespectful, coupled with innocuous family photos, do not affect a person's safety, security, or privacy..." and therefore do not count as harassment, according to the Above The Law blog.

The appeals court rejected Olson's claims of harrassment saying that "Comments that are mean and disrespectful, coupled with innocuous family photos, do not affect a person's safety, security, or privacy -- and certainly not substantially so" and therefore did not fit the legal definition of the term.

Although the appeals court dismissed Olson's case, Technology And Marketing Law Blog writer Eric Goldman gave him credit for hubris for attempting to argue that the trial court erred in not crediting the testimony of his mother, who testified that Labrie's conduct was offensive.

Added Goldman: "The only thing that would have kicked this opinion up a notch would have been a cite to awkwardfamilyphotos.com.

February 17, 2012

I didn?t realise that it has been over a month since i last wrote on here ? when i was taken into hospital a few weeks ago, and then ended up having quite a few weeks off work, i thought i?d have so much time to be able to catch up on blogging, however i dont think i realised fully the extent of how unwell i had been ? (much better now!) so, its been a bit quiet here, but i?m back ?

i hope this post finds everyone well, as ever ? and that February is proving to be a fab month for you ?

for me, its proving a challenging time, but then what would my life be if it was not a challenge. I?m not sure i?m ever destined to have one of those ?easy lives? (do they even exist? ? i think they must, but just not that i?ve seen yet).

when i wrote my reviews of last year, and mentioned the fact i?d had some breathing problems which has inspired me to stop smoking, i dont think i reckoned on the beginning of this year being full of the fact that it has stepped up a gear.

to that end, walking home one day from work, a few weeks ago, as i do most days, i found that i simply could not breathe. i could not get my breath, and by the time i got to my GP surgery was turning a funny colour. i?ve never been ?blue lighted? into hospital before ? and if i could remember it i?m sure it would have been very exciting, alas i dont. i wish i could say it was ?interesting? to experience the immediate emergency care i received that day, and a couple of days later when the same thing happened again (while at work this time ? a bit embarrassing being stretchered out of the place you spend most of your waking hours) but i also don?t really remember that, all that well. Of what I do remember however and can comment on, is how amazing all the healthcare professionals who have looked after me were. From my GP, to the paramedics, to the emergency care teams at the local A + E and the criticare staff, and then the normal ward nurses and doctors, everyone was brilliant.

so here I am now, having to take daily medication and inhalers, and attend endless appointments with Respiratory Nurses and Consultants, and my regular GP. How grateful am I for the NHS? VERY! You often hear the crappy stories, and trust me, working in the healthcare profession myself, I am not blind to them and the realties of when poor care is provided, HOWEVER i think it is so important to also highlight the GOOD care, the good experiences, the people who work in hospitals who are professional, committed, kind, caring, compassionate. One moment I do remember, is the second time, a few days after the first incident, is coming round in the a big scary room in A n E with lots of equipment around me, and needles in my arms, and tubes up my nose (oxygen) and bursting into tears ? it hit me where i was, what was happening, and how crap I felt ? I wont ever forget a nurse, whose name was Lisa ? standing by bedside and holding my hand, comforting me. She stayed with me for about ten minutes, until i calmed down. She provided tissues, and kind words. THOSE PEOPLE ARE AMAZING.

Anyway ? the reason why i?m rambling on about all of that is that the following days that followed were days that kept me inside this hospital, on a ward, in a bay with three very elderly people (hell yeah could i tell you some funny stories about them, especially about the one who tried to get into my bed nearly giving me a heart attack!) ? and that meant, being confined to a hospital ?bed/chair I had not alot to do, other than rest, watch crap tv, listen to music and look out of window and think.

It was the latter I did plenty of ? thank goodness for good music/ipods/phones and the lovely view from the 8th floor is what i say!

So i thought aplenty i did ? and despite my often tweeted tweets about being thick and rambling on alot about nothing (which I do do alot of, sure) I do actually sometimes think ? and the topic i could not stop thinking about was life and death.

as some of you know or may have picked up from previous blogs or twitter if you follow my feed, i work in a home with mostly elderly people, but a home that specialises in care for people who are dying ? so they may be elderly and gradually declining and pass away through age related issues, or they may be people of all ages who come to us to be cared for in the last hours/days and weeks of their lives if they have terminal illness. We see and care for a huge range of people, with a huge range of needs, and over the years I?ve worked various roles in the same place, most recently as a senior member of the care team, and presently as the activities co ordinator/overseeing the pastoral and emotional care of our residents/patients. Its an incredibly challenging role, thats see?s us/myself on a very regular basis being with people as they are dying, as they do die, and afterwards. In all of this we also care for and provide support for the relatives of the person we are providing the care for We try our very hardest to practice something called holistic care which takes into account the person as a whole being and their situation, and their families come into that too. For some people, they have no family, and we the staff are the only people they have.

As part of my job, I find myself very closely involved with these patients in all sorts of different ways. Sometimes its spending time with the distraught families, comforting them, chatting, providing endless tea and coffees as they vigil their relative, sometimes holding their hands ? sometimes sitting with them after their loved one has gone. Sometimes it advising them on what to do, whats next, where to go from there, sometimes is about just being a listening ear. I spend many hours with the patient/resident themselves, doing whatever they want me to be doing, sometimes its playing music, sometimes its reading to them, sometimes is just chatting. Sometimes its just sitting there, and listening to them. I also stay with residents who are gravely ill, and who may be close to going, so they are not alone, if thats what they wish. So i find myself sitting with people, and holding their hands (usually when they don?t have relatives or their relatives are not present) as they take their last breaths, and float into whatever comes next for them after death.

I cant lie and say my job does not impact me ? it does, hugely. For example, yesterday I spent many hours with someone and with their relatives, a family we have had contact with for a few months. And i did sit at my desk just before going home, and shed a little tear. Because in everything my life has involved, one of the hardest things i find i have to do is face people dying so regularly, and have to support/console and try my best to look after a family who is grieving, in their very many different ways. Seeing pain on peoples faces makes even the hardest heart (i used to think my heart had been hardened by life) soften. Maybe my heart is not as hard as it once was (thats probably a whole different blog) ?

anyway, so, back to being on a hospital bed on the 8th floor, with an amazing view over fields and roads, and at night houses all lit up, all I could do, as i often do when walking home from particularly challenging days at work, all i could was think about death and dying. Especially because, although I dont think I was going to die in the emergency room, when you feel like you cant breathe, it does make you pretty scared, and think you might possibly die ?

and all i could think of then, and in this bed, and whilst thinking about all these people i look after and support was, I?m not ready to die yet. I dont want to die. And what will happen when i do??

A few years ago, all i wanted to do was die. I could not cope with life. It wasn?t what I had dreamt it ever to be. It was what I thought it should be, and i could never see a way of getting out of the big black hole I was in ? I could not cope with having to deal with being a survivor of childhood abuse, dealing with the my biological father being who he is and behaving the way he did, and still tries to now, not that i?ve heard from him in a long time. I could not cope with being assaulted in a city I was living in, that I had wanted to try and build a life in. And then moving back to be nearer my Mum and lovely stepdad did I ever imagine finding myself feeling so isolated, turning to alcohol and self destructive behaviour that I still have the scars from now ? and trying to end my life. I never thought life would be the way it has been (and i could write so much more about things i have experienced but i dont want to depress you) ? and that i could be a normal person who wanted to live. because I wanted to die (i wrote a blog about wanting to die if you want to read that).

however, now I find myself in a place, where I dont want to die. I want to live. I want to have life.

But I am faced with death on such a regular basis that I cant switch off from it. And that leaves me with big questions.

what is life about? what is it for? what are we doing here? what is the ultimate purpose of being alive, and what does happen when we die?

where have all the people i?ve sat with and held the hand of as they have passed from this earthly life into something gone?

and where will i go when i die?

and so, that is ultimately what I spent my time thinking about while I was in hospital (cheerful i know ? and please dont think I am in the depths of despair right now, because i am not, these are things i often think about, cant avoid)

so, anyone got any thoughts?

Revealed in accurate detail, the underground world of plants

Revealed in accurate detail, the underground world of plants [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 17-Feb-2012

University of Nottingham

Plant and computer scientists can now study the underground world of plants with more accuracy and clarity. The revolutionary technique will improve our chances of breeding better crop varieties and increasing yields.

Developed at The University of Nottingham by a team of experts from the Schools of Biosciences and Computer Science, the new approach is based on the same X-ray technology used in hospital CT scans and incorporates new image analysis software which, for the first time, can automatically distinguish plant roots from the other materials found in soil.

The results of this research, which has already been demonstrated on the roots of maize, wheat and tomato, have been published in the international scientific journal Plant Physiology.

The interdisciplinary team of scientists from the Centre for Plant Integrative Biology (CPIB) used X-ray Micro Computed Tomography (Micro-CT) to look at the shape and branching pattern the architecture of roots in soil. The data was then fed into the new RooTrak software which overcomes the problem of distinguishing between roots and other elements of the soil.

Breakthrough for food security

Dr Sacha Mooney, an expert in soil physics in the School of Biosciences, said: "This technique is a hugely important advance. The application of X-ray CT for visualising roots has been limited because we simply couldn't see a large portion of the root structure. RooTrak has enabled us to overcome this and has opened up the use of the technology for exploring the key questions regarding how we can manipulate plants and soils for improving our food security."

The RooTrak software works by taking a stack of virtual slices through the root-bearing soil. It treats each slice as a frame in a movie, so that static roots in each slice are treated as moving objects which can be tracked. This allows the software to differentiate between root and water or organic elements in the soil much more effectively than previous techniques. The detailed accurate root architecture can then be seen in three dimensions.

Tony Pridmore, Data Director at CPIB and an expert in tracking and analysis software, said: "Thinking of Micro-CT data as a sequence of images allows us to solve the problems caused by variations in the appearance of plant roots and the similarity of some roots to the surrounding soil. This is important because we can now extract descriptions of root architecture quickly and objectively."

Malcolm Bennett, Professor of Plant Sciences and an expert in root biology, said: "Root architecture critically influences nutrient and water uptake. A key impediment to genetic analysis of root architecture in crops grown in soil has been the ability to image live roots. Recent advances in microscale X-ray Computed Tomography (MicroCT) and RooTrak software at Nottingham now make this possible."

Ambitious project wins a further 3m in funding

The team has just been awarded a 3.5m (nearly 3m) five year European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Investigator Grant to use this new software in conjunction with an innovative microCT-based imaging approach to image wheat roots and select for new varieties with improved water and nutrient uptake efficiencies.

This ambitious project will be undertaken by a multidisciplinary team of scientists in the Centre for Plant Integrative Biology (CPIB) led by Professor Bennett. To undertake this research project help from collaborators across Europe, Mexico and Australia is also required to ensure that the most advanced techniques and biological resources are exploited to radically impact efforts to improve crop performance.

###

The CPIB is funded by the Systems Biology joint initiative of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The research was led by PhD student Stefan Mairhofer, with funding from The University of Nottingham's Interdisciplinary Doctoral Training Centre in Integrative Biology.
